DEF question

With all the crazy issues with DEF, I have a question for you out in Garage land.
I know the DEF needs to be ISO compliant. Also the DEF needs to be fresh as well as if you store it to be in temperatures say 32 deg- 90 deg for longer shelf life. My question is. If my DEF tank is half full and say 6 mos old, if I add about 2.5 gallons of fresh new DEF, does that make the existing DEF in the tank fresher? I have heard two ideas. Some folks say get it down to a little less than a quarter tank and fill it up with fresh DEF. Other say periodically just top it off once in awhile to keep it fresh. Anyone no the best way to manage the DEF and keep it fresh so you don't get those annoying messages?
Thank You
Mike

DEF question

I usually just wait till the "won't start in 500miles" message comes up. Then just fill up.

I just put 2.5 gallons of some generic def from a fuel station off the 5 fwy headed back from bay. I thought I had some mopar def in back but apparently the better half took it. Was hesitant to put it in , but hey it might speed up the scr replacement lol
Edit

So far so good

Re: DEF question

I think you may be over thinking this. Just fill up when you want to. I buy 5 gallons when the warning message comes on. Peak DEF at AutoZone.

Re: DEF question

I have been thinking about this matter also. Peak says the DEF has a shelf life of 2 years, but Mopar says it is one year.

For me, I will probably not fill the DEF tank, unless I plan on doing a LOT of driving.

I think the thing to do is leave it near empty and add as dom42 mentioned.

Re: DEF question

I just buy Peak blue DEF and dump one in whenever I get between 1/4 to 1/2 full. Unless you are in AZ or south Texas, or only drive 5k a year, there shouldn't be any problems. I haven't had any in 20K miles and I have put at least 3 jugs thru it... Sams' club has it for about 10.50$ a jug in our area....( MIdwest)
