def usage

I have noticed that my GC has used just over a 1/4 tank of def fluid in just over 600 miles!!! Called two local jeep dealerships who do not have any techs trained for the ecodiesel and was told that is normal for new vehicle.. So what kind of mileage are you guys getting out of a tank of def?? At this rate I am going to be lucky to hit 3,000 miles per tank.

Re: def usage

I dont really trust the gauage as it fluxuates up and down. I have about 6K on mine and I dont believe it was filled when I picked it up (as it showed it was only 3/4 full).....I have put in about 8 gallons. If you go to a truck stop and fill it at the pump....its much cheaper than the 2.5 gallon jugs.

Re: def usage

I've noticed some fluctuation in the gauge too. Hopefully your actual consumption isn't that high..

My DEF was full when I picked my truck up and now about 4800 miles the gauge is reading approximately 20%.

Re: def usage

I put 6 gallons in it at 100 miles and now it is reading under 3/4 tank at just over 700 miles. the past week I have not seen it go any higher than 3/4 tank while driving.

Mine is using around 1.2 gal per 1k miles. I topped mine off at 1100 miles then again at 7300. That's 6200 miles on 8 gallons. Pilot sells it at the big rig pumps. It cost 17 bucks to fill it from nearly empty but I don't recall the price or quantity.

I'm interested in your driving habits. I drive 30/70 city/hwy with no heavy traffic and 60-70mph on 4 lanes. My EVIC avg mpg is 26-27. I would imagine DEF is generally used in proportion to fuel and consumed more in conditions where NO2 emissions are produced. I read that NO2 is produced at higher combustion temps so aggressive city driving and higher speeds might be a factor.

I drive 60 miles per day back and forth to work. one town and 60 to 65 the rest of the way also no heavy traffic . No mountains just open highway I average 26 mpg hand calculated. Maybe 5 minutes of idle time in the am.

Does your EVIC show 26 mpg as well? I would expect with that type of driving that you would be closer to 29-30 mpg if you don't accelerate hard or often. Even with the slight difference in economy, the DEF usage is way off IMO.

I think it usually reads 25.8 area and the winter blends around here kills mileage. My cummins looses about 3 mpg during the winter. The issue I am running into is ALL the local dealerships(50 mile radius) do not have a tech trained on the ecodiesel so all the answers I get is "that does not sound normal but keep running it and it should go up"

Re: def usage

Mine wasn't full (forgot to check) when I picked it up the Saturday before Christmas. 14 miles on the odometer.

I filled it with DEF at 2200 miles, about $17 at the pump.

It now has 3200 miles, and as I pulled into my garage tonight after work it showed about 85% full.

In this cold (Maryland), my EVIC and hand-calculated MPG is around 24.
