Diesel #2 HPR? What is that? It's OK, apparently.

I pulled up to a station's pump the other day and saw this. It gave me pause, I hadn't seen it before and there was no direct label saying ULSD ≤ 15 ppm S (less than or equal to 15 parts per million Sulfur).

So I called the 800 number (800-871-0773) to ask. Fortunately it wasn't late at night and their office was open. The guy who answered said it is actually ULSD ≤ 5 ppm S(!). Correct, that's a 5, not 15. That's what he said. And he confirmed yes, it is compatible with my JGC CRD. Okay, so I filled the tank.

In case you see it out there, it's apparently OK to use. Propel Fuel's web site has this:
Quote:
Diesel HPR

If you drive a diesel, then your vehicle is ready for Propel Diesel HPR - it’s that simple. Propel Diesel HPR meets the ASTM D975 diesel fuel specification (ULSD) for use in all diesel engines. Propel Diesel HPR contains no biodiesel.
I searched here and there were only a few posts with a passing mention of HPR. Note, this is not biodiesel.

A couple more pictures of what I saw at the pump.

Re: Diesel #2 HPR? What is that? It's OK, apparently.

I wish I could get some of that out here! They claim it's higher cetane than conventional US diesel, and not biodiesel.

Propel Diesel HPR

Fueling with Diesel HPR

Diesel HPR is a premium fuel engineered to maximize clean diesel engine performance. Diesel HPR meets the ASTM D975 diesel specification (ULSD) for use in all diesel engines. Refined from recycled fats & oils, Diesel HPR outperforms both petroleum diesel and biodiesel in performance, emissions and value. Diesel HPR does not contain biodiesel.

Performance

Performance formulated Diesel HPR has a 75 cetane rating, 40% higher than regular diesel, for smoother combustion and a better ride. Diesel HPR burns cleaner and more efficiently, which means more power and torque for your rig. And unlike biodiesel, Diesel HPR provides uncompromised cold weather performance. Diesel HPR is additized to provide excellent lubricity in all driving conditions and exceeds ULSD lubricity specification.

Renewable

While Diesel HPR does not contain biodiesel, it is made from similar renewable biomass sources including recycled fats and oils. Refined from renewable biomass through advanced hydrotreating technology, Diesel HPR meets the toughest specifications required by automotive and engine manufacturers, enabling the fuel to be used by any diesel vehicle.

Air Quality & Environment

The California Air Resources Board classifies Diesel HPR, also known as renewable diesel, as an ultra-low carbon fuel. The fuel can achieve a 40-80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil diesel. In addition, renewable diesel:
  • Reduces NOx emissions by 14%, PM by 34% & CO by 13% compared to petroleum diesel
  • Is sulfur-free, aromatics-free and virtually odorless

Outperforming B20

Diesel HPR outperforms Biodiesel B20, delivering more power and lower emissions. Diesel HPR is made from 98% renewable content, while B20 biodiesel is 20% renewable and 80% petroleum. Unlike biodiesel, Diesel HPR provides uncompromised cold weather performance.

Wow, sounds great! 98% renewable content - I feel even better and greener driving my Diesel!

Re: Diesel #2 HPR? What is that? It's OK, apparently.

Unfortunately, it is currently available only in CA .....

Here is the technical spec sheet :

http://web-assets.propelfuels.com.s3...cification.pdf

Neste Oil in Finland is the originator of HPR. Info here

https://www.neste.com/na/en

I understand that in states other than CA, Chevron and Shell have the best diesel and consistenly have Cetane numbers around 43/45. I use our local Chevron or Shell station ("Pure" diesel no Bio added) but I do add Power Services Diesel Kleen and Boost to every tank.

I wish we had that in Washington. It seems to be a California only thing.

I've been using Propel HPR Diesel almost exclusively (except for trips outside of CA) for over one year now and have had no issues in my 2014 EcoDiesel.

Looks like more pumps available then when I first heard about it. Originally the only one remotely close was by the Airport SJC. Still all the stations are not in our normally traveled areas.

To me it sounds like they formulated the best parts of ULSD and BioDiesel.

I was at the Fremont one for those pictures. I'm in Redwood City now and will top up at the one here. I'll start planning my routes around them as I can.

This was discussed a couple of years ago. Silverdiesel started a thread in Aug 2015, here: The renewable biofuel that replaces ULSD

Let me know if you happen to see DEF at the pump at any of these. So far I've only been able to find it at Rotten Robbie nearish the Airport. Out of our normal travel but don't have to fill that often.

Just added Propel app to my IPhone.
Gives locations and prices.
Going to try few tanks, see what results I get.
Since most of my miles are on same traffic free commute. Will use my Mileage Keeper app, using since purchase of my Jeep.
Also have Banks Idash, currently get regens around every 210 miles. Wonder if this changes with Propel?
