Re: Diesel Prices

On average diesel fuel costs more than RUG. Sometimes it dips below, but not usually.

I love diesels and buy nothing but diesels but the reality is that on just pure expenses, at least if you don't include resale, you would save money buying the V6 gasser everytime. Is saving money is your primary concern, I wouldn't buy the diesel.

Re: Diesel Prices

Diesel prices are now on par with regular here in Houston. I last filled up at $2.49/gal

Re: Diesel Prices

Here on Long Island there is one station where diesel is 3.09 and Super is 3.27. Not bad. Usually it the other way around.

Curious, what was your mpg compared to their 18mpg? Apologies if you already posted that in an earlier thread.
I never did a calculated average for the trip, but the trip meter said a bit over 30 for a few shy of 2,000 miles. Highest tank was 33 and lowest was 28. Plenty of off road jaunts as well. Probably would have averaged 32 if I was strictly on the highway. This was with three people and all their gear in the Jeep.

Re: Diesel Prices

From time to time I've seen diesel less than regular. Generally the differential now is $.10 - $.20 here in the SW. Still, good to have the fuel price app on my Overland.

Re: Diesel Prices

Here in Southern Cal, diesel has been about $.50 cheaper than regular for the past few months and at times close to a dollar less. There was a period from around Sept of 2014 through February of this year where diesel was equal to or more expensive than gas for a while, but shifted back in our favor early in the year. Filled up today at $2.99 for diesel, and regular was $3.53 at the same Shell so nice delta there.

Re: Diesel Prices

Diesel can be from -5% below to 20% higher than regular unleaded gas the past 4 years I've owned a diesel Jeep. In the early summer it's best as gas is at it's highest demand and diesel at its lowest (refining capacity almost making diesel fuel exclusively). In the winter diesel costs more as the refineries make heating oil so it constricts supply and gas demand is down as people travel less in the winter.

That being said compared to the Hemi us soot burners easily beat the v8s mpg by a whopping 30-50% in mpg so even if we pay more in winter we still get much higher mpg to cover the difference in cost.

The way I've considered the diesel option - you get the power of a v8 and the fuel economy of a 4 cylinder at the same time. Compared to the Eco[or]Boost which gets you the power of a v8 and the fuel economy of a v8 when you are making power and only if you can keep the turbos unwound you may get the fuel economy of a v6 (the 3.5 and 2.7 motors are thirsty if they have to use boost).

Re: Diesel Prices

I live in NYC, but drive every week through NJ, where fuel prices are much lower. I have been paying $2.53/gal recently at a very convenient location in NJ, close to Manhattan (Shell). Even in winter they charged just $2.59 most of the time. In areas of NJ a bit further south there are places selling diesel for as little as $2.37, though not consistently.

For comparison the cheapest current price here that I am aware of for regular gas is $2.33 and for premium $2.69.

Re: Diesel Prices

I'm not sure what's going on but I love it! I've been driving diesels for about 10 years and D2 has historically been about the same, or a little more than, premium. Now all of a sudden it's .20-.65 less than RUG. This is awesome!

Re: Diesel Prices

A new grocery store opened here in Spring Texas a coulpe of weeks ago. Their grand opening promotional price for Regular and Diesel is $2.20. I know this wont last long, but it's nice while the promotion is going on. Down the road about 1/2 mile are two competing gas stations (Exxon, Shell) selling Regular at $2.49 and Diesel at $2.95. These two gas stations are less than a block from each other and keep their prices equal. Several gas stations around the area fluctuate about .50 cents a gallon on gas/diesel prices.

Re: Diesel Prices

With some refinery maintenance going on (perfect timing) in Southern California gas prices have sky rocketed over the course of a week, however diesel prices haven't budged. Just filled up today and regular gas was $1.28 per gallon higher than diesel!

Re: Diesel Prices

In Arizona, I have never seen Diesel fuel any more than 20 cents more than RUG but that was over a year ago. Since then we have been less than RUG by 20-30 cents. When I was in San Diego and LA, I was seeing Diesel fuel about $1.00-$1.50 less per gallon. With current trends, it is just another reason to love the Diesel over the gasoline engine options.
