Diesel Prices

Just drove from Taos to ABQ and back. The delta between regular and diesel here in NM is over $1/gal. Gas is about $2.50 lowest and not much below $3.59 for diesel. This totally sucks.

Re: Diesel Prices

For the most part, a good chunk of the difference is taxes. It of course varies by state and even down to county/city level, but the we diesel drivers are generally paying at least 40cents per gallon more in taxes alone. It is home heating oil season, but I didn't think that had a large effect on the SW as the overwhelming majority of oil heat is in the NE and upper midwest, or so I believe. Gas prices also tend to move much faster than diesel.

Unfortunately, even I don't know how I would make it more fair - the big trucks DO place more wear on the roads, and SHOULD pay more, and the theory being that the more fuel they need, the more they are using the roads is valid. Would it be nice if there was a non-commercial diesel fuel price? Absolutely! Outside of a tax return option, I don't know how we actually implement...

I will say that I can't recall seeing a 40% premium before - there may be more going on. Here in South Florida, we are at 2.95 ish for RUG vs. 3.35 ish for D2 - 15% differential.

Re: Diesel Prices

Taxes are the issue, for sure. Here in California, unless our legislature changes it's mind (not likely) we will see up to a 75 cent/gallon tax increase on the 1st of the year as part of the governor's cap and trade program. Some are predicting that there will be a bigger hit on diesel than gasoline.

Very frustrating since 1. Diesel is easier to refine, hence less energy to refine it, and 2. we have cleaner emissions with the DEF system than a comparable gas engine.

Just show what happens when the inmates run the asylum.

Re: Diesel Prices

Here in Virgina we get a $.09/gallon rebate if you send in your receipts. It's not a lot, but it's something. Right now there is about a $.70-.80 difference between regular unleaded and diesel.

Re: Diesel Prices

Here in Oregon, commercial vehicles over 26,000 lbs pay a fuel tax based on their weight and number of miles driven. http://www.odot.state.or.us/forms/motcarr/reg/9928.pdf. Oregon has the same tax rate for gasoline and diesel at retail locations.

Re: Diesel Prices

Filled up yesterday at $3.44 regular $2.77 high test about the same as diesel.
I used to fill my SuperDuty up in 2003 for $1.00 gallon a lot of times before our governments decided that we need to tax diesel more.
Most refineries are running close to full capacity for gas production and there isn't any excess for diesel.
Fracking and low fuel prices are not going to solve our problem. Only new refineries will do that and none (that's to the EPA) have been built in this country since 1975...

Please explain the rebate. I am unaware of any rebate for on the road fuel.

Re: Diesel Prices

I flew out to Arizona to buy my Diesel Excursion in 2004. Diesel was much higher than gas...don't know why. On the way home, other states were considerably less.

Re: Diesel Prices

As long as that much of a price delta remains between gas and diesel it's kind of hard to justify a diesel strictly from a fuel economy standpoint alone.

Re: Diesel Prices

Home heating oil is the biggest driver during the winter months. Refining changes to deal with the increased need in the NE and eastern states. Yeah, it sucks for those who live in the more oil rich regions of the country. Remember oil and gas are commodities and traded on global markets.

There is one being built in Dickinson, North Dakota, and it's about three quarters complete. Its primary function will be to refine crude into diesel fuel.
