Diesel Smell After Cat Replacement

Just had the upper cat replaced on my '15 Ecodiesel. MIL has been on since the 2nd day I drove it (apparently bad cat from the factory, according to Jeep service). After picking it up today, I noticed more of a diesel smell than usual, concentrated around the firewall area and noticeable in the cabin. Called the service department and they said the diesel tech mentioned that it may take some time to burn off the oil that was in/on the new cat. Anyone else experience this? If so, how long did it take to burn off the smell?

Re: Diesel Smell After Cat Replacement

Took my Jeep back to the dealer due to the odor. Tech mentioned that he used some penetrating oil, could be that residue (doubt it) so he sprayed some degreaser in the general area and hosed that off. Didn't do much, but I decided to drive it a little. After about 40 highway miles, MIL came back on and white smoke started pouring out from under the hood. Headed back to the dealer, now I need a new EGR sensor and some sort of flow sensor (coolant?). Dealer couldn't see any smoke, but I found a post on here that mentioned very similar issue (white smoke after new cat). Sent that info to the dealer. Sensors will be installed tomorrow, not too confident of the long term reliability of this vehicle.

Re: Diesel Smell After Cat Replacement

I had an odor after mine was replaced and it went away after a while. I do smell odd fumes when it does a passive regen (mainly when windows open and stopped). I have a nose of a bloodhound it's said so I'm overly sensitive.

Re: Diesel Smell After Cat Replacement

Just got my Jeep back after a week in the shop. Apparently when the tech installed the new cat the flange gasket that seals the cat (don't know which end) got kinked when he tightened the the clamp. That was the reason for the exhaust leak and the white smoke. The tech went through 2 forced regens and didn't see any smoke, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this ordeal is over.

Re: Diesel Smell After Cat Replacement

I wish I could. There are only a handful of Jeep dealers in VT, and I believe the one I'm going to (the one I purchased from as well) is the only one in the state w/ a diesel tech. The leak was caused by the tech. However, the MILs are a engineering/design/manufacturing issue. What I really need is a different vehicle.

Re: Diesel Smell After Cat Replacement

Another EGR-related issue, with no info in the code. Dealer is waiting for contact from Chrysler engineers.
