Nature of the beast. Winter fuel hurts, not to mention more idling to warm up, and inconsistent speeds due to varying weather and road conditions.

Re: Eco Diesel Mileage

11K so far over 10 months of ownership. I log every gallon of fuel and calculate MPG manually. My previous car was a Honda CR-V and I put over 230K on it before selling it and getting this 4X4 Grand Cherokee. Love the diesel so far. Not truly trouble-free, has spent 6-7 days in the shop troubleshooting a check engine light that is nagging. P20EE, apparently.

It gets better mileage than my CR-V, is much more luxurious and comfortable.

Love it, generally speaking, so far.

It's better to use the L/100km measurement when comparing fuel efficiency due to the fact it is linear whereas the inverse (mpg) is nonlinear and misleading. Mpg is great for estimating range on the tank, of course.

However, with L/100 km it's easier to gauge how much it's costing you in fuel. A change of 1 L/100 km is close to 0.5 gallons/100 miles. My consumption is off by about 2.5 L/100 km vs the same run done in August... so my 250 mile run burned an extra ~3 gallons. Call it $8 more in fuel. Oh well.

To be fair, I haven't inflated my stock tires back up to 44 psi cold pressure like they were in the summer, but they're about 40 right now.

Ah, the vicissitudes of the EcoDiesel...

What is meant by linear and nonlinear? And, why can't MPG be used to compare fuel efficiency? I get that they are inversely related, namely L/100km=fuel/distance and MPG=distance/fuel, but I don't follow what is meant by linear/nonlinear. And I majored in Applied Mathematics.

Explain?

Haha, I didn't say that exactly. It's math, so obviously you *can* compare, but it's not intuitive to do it correctly.

Here's an example from a post I submitted on another thread:
If you imagine a 10 mpg vehicle dropping to 5 mpg (i.e. a loss of 5 mpg), that is a substantially different change in fuel economy than a 30 mpg vehicle dropping to 25 mpg. The former is a change of approximately 25 L/100 km, while the latter is a change of approximately 1.5 L/100 km—basically an order of magnitude difference in absolute fuel economy delta when comparing the "same" 5 mpg drop.
This graph illustrates the basic concept (give it a few seconds to load, and I apologize if the link doesn't work on mobile devices). Imagine the vertical axis as fuel consumed and the horizontal axis as distance. The red line is y=x which is tantamount to the euro approach of L/100 km (or if we had a metric like gallons per 100 miles). The blue line represents the inverse of that function, y=1/x, which is equivalent to using mpg. It's far easier to compare arbitrary points on the red line, whereas the blue line results in "weirdness" like my mpg fuel consumption example above.

As I said before, mpg is the better choice for estimating range on a tank, and I understand why this is important to denizens of a large country such as ours. The inverse of mpg (L/100 km or gallons/100 miles) is better for measuring fuel economy, though.

Re: Eco Diesel Mileage

I love getting 30+ MPG on the highway with this rig!

For the past week I've been driving a rental 2015 JGC with the V-6 gas engine. Overall for 400+ miles it's been 16-17 MPG for combined city/highway driving, whereas my Diesel gets in the low-to-mid 20s.

Love that oil burner!

Re: Eco Diesel Mileage

Just turned 26k miles we had a cold week in Chicago recently, down to -15f, lot of idling, needing warmup every trip, MPG went to 19.9. Back above freezing now, driving 50/50 highway/city it's bounced back to 28mpg overall average, I'd say its broken in now. Even the diff has quieted down some. Last year I would average 22-24 mpg with the same type of driving.

Eco Diesel Mileage

And at below freezing starts and gets up to temp, good as any gas engine. Some old F250 I drove in this cold with 6.0 have to cycle the glow plugs 10 times let it idle for 5 minutes, just to drive it.

Re: Eco Diesel Mileage

I still think the latest computer flash hurt my mileage.. I can't break 26 on the hwy anymore even in warm weather, and it used to be 30-32.... Don't know what to think.

It could just be the winter fuel blend. I always notice a drop in the winter.

Yes, I agree that's very irksome. Personally, I find there's something magical about that 30 number (a level my Jeep rarely achieves). I just get warm fuzzies seeing 30+ cruising along on level highway, you know. Well, actually, I see 7.8 L/100 km, but my proclivities are well known at this point (haha).

A few considerations, though. The difference you cite (26 vs 30) is equal to burning approximately half a gallon more per 100 miles driven. Call it an extra $1.50 per 100 miles or so. I know, there's also the principle of the matter but at least this isn't breaking the bank.

Also, as others noted, you may have winterized diesel which has less energy per gallon. Further, don't neglect the serious fuel economy-sapping effect of headwinds (realtime wind map).

You could check your tire pressure, and you could drop in some Diesel Kleen cetane booster (available at Walmart/"everywhere"), but mostly I suggest waiting until summer comes again before drawing a firm conclusion about reduced fuel economy.
