The drivetrain won't reach peak efficiency until it warms up...which takes 10 miles or more depending on ambient temperature. Best case, you are driving 17 miles each way. Only 7 miles are after warmup. If you have more drive cycles than work and back, efficiency goes down due to the shorter trips.

I'm a field engineer and ususlly drive 80% highway and most drive cycles are > 30 continous miles. My overall per tank mpg usually calculates to 26.5 but has been as high as 30 on longer interstate trips at 70mph.

During the holidays I was off work a few weeks and observed similar results to yours as I only drive shorter runs. Thats my theory and follows what I have seen with mine.

I never actually thought about it this way, but I think your explanation is spot-on! And you're right, my commute is about 15 miles each way. Thanks for your input!

I forgot to add that for my 28mpg lifetime average that roughly 80% of those miles were highway.

Re: Eco Diesel Mileage

Love the truck and love the diesel. My purpose for the post is to see if there is something specifically faulty with my vehicle as it seems to not measure up to the MPG claims on the window sticker.

As I have read through the responses, most of the respondents appear to be getting closer to the claims on the window sticker than what I am experiencing.

Re: Eco Diesel Mileage

10366 miles on my overland 4x4.

Ran 28.5 mpg from Koons to Syracuse when it was brand new.

Over the next 10k I go from about 24.5-25.5 mpg on the EVIC. More city than highway driving, not to mention I'm not the lightest on the throttle.

My 2010 WK with the hemi averaged 12.5 on the same drive cycle.

Can't help but say I have a huge smie on my face.

Re: Eco Diesel Mileage

Typically over a twice daily 20 mile drive of which half is highway (but with some throttle changes on the freeway), I get 21-22.5mpg. Freeway speed here is 70+. I once got 30.5 over a 100mile stretch doing 65ish. On a separate 100 mile stretch, I only manage 26.5 doing 75-85pmh. My calculated mileage is usually higher than the indicated gauge mileage by .5-1mpg.

City driving only nets me 17.5-19mpg. I honestly expected better city mileage. I never expected less than the EPA sticker without aggressive throttle.

FYI: I only have 3700 miles on it so far. 4x4 Overland

Metoo, our Jeeps are siblings; albeit, mine has ~8,000 miles.

Re: Eco Diesel Mileage

I'm totally impressed with the mileage of this thing. My daily commute is 63 miles round trip, mostly freeway @ 75 to 80mph. I do go down a hill every day from an elevation of 7700' and then reverse climbing that bad boy back. The hill giveth and then taketh :-). On average, I have been getting 24.8 with a best of 27.2 and low of 23.6. Just hit 5k on the odo, so expect a slight improvement down the road. I am totally surprised how well this thing runs.

If I actually maintained the 65 limit, these numbers would really get more impressive, but its hard to do, as this vehicle is like riding on glass and so peaceful. They did an excellent job on soundproofing the cabin.

Re: Eco Diesel Mileage

If you got 30.5 at 65 mph, you are exceeding the rated MPG for highway. With no wind, on flat ground, after a 5k mile break in, tires at 38psi, you should see 32-34 at 65 mph. If you drive 75 to 80, you will not. If you are in hills, have a headwind, or constantly speeding up and slowing down, you won't meet rated mpg. There may not be anything wrong with your Jeep.

Re: Eco Diesel Mileage

Hi, I am Jimbo from S. Louisiana. My 2014 JGC limited 4X2 diesel is a great car. My driving is a mix of 50% suburban and 50% highway - at the speed limit. I have had it since February 2014 and have 14265miles on it. My average measured full tank mileage is 28.6 mpg. The best 32.2mpg, worst 26.3mpg. The best was a tank full on a 2500 mile trip to Virginia and back, average for full trip was 31.7mpg. Drive up-coastal- back mountains.

This truck is getting 2.4 mpg better than my previous vehicle a 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid. I have done my best to hypermile both vehicles and the JGC delivers clearly better mpg. The 3.0 diesel JGC gives particularly higher mpg than the Highlander Hybrid at 65-75 mph.
