Ecodiesel Lifetime Oil Change Contract $1200. Deal Or No Deal?

Hi,

We just picked up our Ecodiesel today, and the dealer offered us a lifetime oil change contract that covers up to three oil changes per year for as long as we own it for $1200.

Our plan is to keep this rig, provided it tows our trailer etc. with no issues for at least five to eight years. Eight years is if we buy the Chrysler 8yr warranty.

Does anyone here have a dealer who offers a similar contract, and if so for how much?

Does this seem like a good deal for $1200?

We're not altogether sure how many oil changes we would be having done per year if we drive 15,000 miles per year or so, and since we're new Ecodiesel owners and new to synthetic oil, we're not sure how much it would cost us to do it ourselves vs pay the dealer for each change as we go.

Historically I've done all of my oil changes on all of my rigs since the beginning of time along with just about every other fixit job. I spent some time as a VW mechanic in a previous life, but if I can let someone else get dirty while I sit back and loaf, that's good by me, IF it's cost-effective to some degree.

Anyone have any thoughts? We're curious what others would do in this situation.

Thanks in advance.

Bluegrass Picker

Depends on how many miles you put on it and how often you plan on changing your oil. If you are fine with 10k mile changes and do <30k per year, it's a deal. Oil changes can range from $150-200 per change depending on your location, so you would only need 6-8 oil changes or 60-80k miles until you broke even. Obviously if you plan on selling the vehicle before that amount of mileage, it may not pan out.

Keep in mind this hedges the labor and oil cost too. I think it's a good idea, but I would have them add tire rotations too, maybe they will throw it in, even if it's an extra cost, good deal. Reason being, you need tire rotations, if you have the oil change contract in place you will be stuck paying extra for tire rotations every oil change. I'd take it a step further and add other maintenance items.

what a horrible biz decision by your dealership hopefully they are good people, hate to see them cut corners down the line when they realize how under water they are on this deal. if you drive 20k miles a year and don't plan on moving it's a no-brainer.

Read the contract. Up to 3 a year won't mean a thing if the contract specifies every 10,000 miles. That would give you 3 every 2 years, or 12 oil changes over your life with the Jeep, if you keep it the full 8 years.

What does Chrysler recommend as far as oil change intervals?Do you really want to do this yourself with a brand new truck? You will be the scapegoat if anything happens.Deisel oil changes are a little more involved and are more expensive.

To me it sounds like a no brainer, take it.

Involved? Not really. R&R the plug and filter and fill with oil. Wait for it all to get to the pan, start, check for leaks and double check level.

More oil to put in but that's about it. Keep your receipts and use a Mopar filter and you've covered your ass. Fed law says you can't be denied warranty service if you've done your own work, provided your work or aftermarket parts didn't cause the failure.

MB Diesel has it right...
The ED is an easy peasy oil change, especially if you install a Fumoto drain valve !

And, more importantly, you KNOW the job will get done right.

Re: Ecodiesel Lifetime Oil Change Contract $1200. Deal Or No Deal?

My 2014 has 18K and the service indicator has me changing oil and filter every 6000 miles which seems too often for synthetic oil. My daily usage is a short commute with occassional highway speeds. I would be interested in hearing what other diesel owners are observing.

FYI with a coupon, my dealer charges $179 for an O&F job. $199 without the coupon so your $1200 deal sounds pretty good to me.

Re: Ecodiesel Lifetime Oil Change Contract $1200. Deal Or No Deal?

I got a lifetime contract for $800 through my dealer when I bought the vehicle. No mileage constraints and up to 4 changes per year.

I think even $1200 is a good deal, depending on who is administering the contract. In my case, this is a dealer offer, so I have to go to a dealer shop to get 'er done. (Although there are a number of dealers on the West Coast.)

I like changing my oil every 5000 miles, so I thought this was a no-brainer... Costs me $15 to have the tires rotated at the same time.

I've done 4 changes in the first year with ~16K miles on the Jeep.

Re: Ecodiesel Lifetime Oil Change Contract $1200. Deal Or No Deal?

My dealer charges only $120 (with tax) for oil and filter change using the Pennzoil synthetic. So I just bring it there and go over to a home / garden place next door.

Re: Ecodiesel Lifetime Oil Change Contract $1200. Deal Or No Deal?

Here's one even better... my dealer does Toys for Tots every year at Christmas and for every new unwrapped toy you bring in... you get a free oil change coupon ! I asked them specifically if this includes my Eco Diesel and they said yes !! I bring them 2 toys every year ! My receipt shows using all the proper fluids and filters.....
