Been down this track before with the workshop only range.
Show me on the specifications where it says 'full synthetic'.

Re: EcoDiesel Which Oil Will You Use

In regards to our Aussie friends being allowed to use other oils could it be that the emissions equipment on those jeeps are different (I.e.) not as stringent?

I know that Porsche's exhaust equipment on their vehicles are made to one of three different levels:
1. California compliant for all the US
2. Euro Specs
3. Rest of World (ROW)

I believe the type of oil required and the spec is all due to the DPF. When the vehicle enters "regen" mode, there is additional diesel that is injected during the exhaust stroke, which means a tiny amount can bypass the piston rings and mix with the oil, thus contaminating the oil. You will find that any oil that VW, Audi, MB or Porsche use in their diesels that have a DPF, should be fine for the jeep. Its not so much the lubrication qualities, but more how it stands up against contamination by diesel.

Re: EcoDiesel Which Oil Will You Use

Reading the spec requirement in the owners manual, it says "Synthetic" does that mean it must be fully synthetic, or semi suitable as long as it is ACEA C3?

Only use ACEA C3 SAE 5W-30 Synthetic Low Ash engine oil meeting Chrysler material standard MS-11106 or Pennzoil Ultra Euro L full synthetic 5W-30 motor oil, which is recommended for all operating temperatures. This engine oil improves low temperature starting and vehicle fuel economy.

Re: EcoDiesel Which Oil Will You Use

"meeting Chrysler material standard MS-11106 or Pennzoil Ultra Euro L full synthetic 5W-30 motor oil"

Its simple. Look on the back of the container. If it says MS-11106, its acceptable, otherwise its not.

Re: EcoDiesel Which Oil Will You Use

I've had warranty issues before, in 1990 with a Toyota Supra Turbo. Since a lad, I've always fully serviced my own cars and kept a log of what was used/installed and when. Plus I always used the appropriate manufacturer branded filters and recommended oils/weights. I am also a Synthaholic and whenever I can, use premium oils such as Mobil1 !

My initial claim to Toyota started off being quite difficult (I got the corporate shuffle and unending letters/requests) but then became easier when I gave them all supporting documentation plus a great letter from my local Toyota dealer about the overall condition of my car. This because I had a great relationship with them (I bought the car from them) and they did some TRD upgrades/installs on the car for me.

Given my previous experience, for 'Smiffy', I bought 3 cases of Pennzoil Ultra Euro L and Mopar oil filters and will keep all service documentation plus photo's for back-up.

Being as I am now getting a little less limber, my service work is limited to fluid and filter changes plus any associated items in the service guide that my ageing body can deal with .

I'm happy to take it in to our local dealer for any warranty work plus anything that I feel could cause me a strain LOL !

My advice : STICK WITH WHAT THEY SPECIFY and don't be a cheapskate !

+1 here.

I haven't used oil yet. Only 3,500 miles and two months old. But I'll follow the book exactly as it says, either
(a) ACEA C3 meeting Chrysler spec MS-11106, or
(b) Pennzoil Ultra Euro L full synthetic. 5W-30.

Haven't decided yet.

Yeah there are other great oils out there. For many years I've been a Castrol guy, for example. But Jeep has their recommendations and I love this car and want it to last 1 million miles, so I'll follow their recommendation without over-thinking things.

As we'd say in the Marine Corps: You are not paid to THINK, you are paid to DO. Well of course we want thinking Marines, but you get the idea.

Me? I'll follow orders for how to maintain this excellent machine.

Re: EcoDiesel Which Oil Will You Use

For this poll I voted (i), Pennzoil, but would have wanted to vote both (i) and (iii), Other MS-11106. As I said above, I haven't decided yet. But I am leaning towards the Pennzoil.
