EGR at its finest?

I'm sure this has been talked about before, but Chrysler is really ok with this? How much does this soot crap shorten the life of the engine? I just took mine diffuser off and cleaned it at 28k.

Welcome to the forum. Did you happen to take pics of the EGR cleaning process or can you make a step by step writeup? A lot of us are interested in this EGR buildup.

The GDE tune is what a lot of owners are turning to because it disables EGR entirely, via firmware. The more meticulous owners might like to turn it off *and* clean off the buildup that had occurred to date.

Hey! Thanks! I've lurked for a while but never actually posted. I thought the photos went with my post but I'm doing this from my phone so I might not be able to till tomorrow when i can get on a work computer.

It was actually pretty simple getting it off. I'd seen a lot of the RAM guys posting about cleaning there's and I couldn't imagine mine being much better at 28,000 miles.

If you take the engine cover off and the foam insulation off the front left side of the engine bay (passenger side), the egr diffuser is the only pipe with the white heating cloth around it sitting above the fuel rail. There are two screws holding each side in - 13mm on the front side and 10mm on the engine intake side. I recommend loosening them and then hand removing so they don't disappear into the abyss.

As for cleaning in, I used an old t shirt and diesel fuel. I stuck the diffuser end in a cup of diesel and let it sit for 10 min. It turned the cup from green to pure black with all the soot that came off. With a little elbow grease I removed the rest of the crap on it. I did my best with the intake but that shit is deep in there.

I have the GDE Tune and I can tell you it makes a world of difference. The regen interval increase alone is worth the money. I went from regens every 150-200 miles and now its from 700-800 miles between intervals.

It'll be interesting to see what the diffuser looks like after a few thousand miles with the tune and egr off.

I'll post pictures tomorrow, unless someone can tell me how to from my phone.

All in all it was an easy job. I let the piece dry for about 20 min and put it back on. No codes thrown or anything. I know it goes without saying, but keep the car off the entire time the diffuser is disconnected.

Re: EGR at its finest?

Never mind I figured out the pictures...

First is when I took it off. Second is letting it sit in the diesel and the third is the finished project. If you go on you tube and look up mopar Eco Diesel there's a guy who has some videos on the RAM equivalent and cleaning. Enjoy! Hit me with any questions. I try to be as self reliant as possible and I've taught myself a thing or two about this engine.

Thanks a lot for the pictures. I just recently picked up a 15 summit eco myself and have read about also cleaning the intake manifold. Have you done this?

Re: EGR at its finest?

I didn't get a chance to clean out the intake manifold yet and I'm not particularly sure how to. It seemed like it needed the most work. If anyone knows how I'm all ears.

I only have a thousand miles or I would give it a shot. I read it good to do every 25,000 or so. I will be doing it once I get there. I think I saw pictures somewhere. If I have time I will research it and post what I find here.

Re: EGR at its finest?

That's much appreciated. I tried to get as much out as I could through the opening but it wasn't big enough to get all the way in
