A weight distribution hitch will apply a downward torque on the receiver which tightens it up and eliminates the clunking. For smaller trailers that dont need a WD hitch, you could try to shim the receiver to tighten it up if it bothers you. Some receivers are tighter than others. I had to add a couple of spot welded bumps on my towbar then ground them to fit tight on my Excursion. It clunked constantly before that. If the retaining pin doesn't fit the receiver and towbar hole, that causes clunks too.

Great to hear.
Spot welds and grinding to fit was a thought, but being away and on the road I slipped a sock over it and jammed it in to make it a bit tighter. Actually sort of worked for a few hours.

Anyways glad to hear it wasn't all in my head.
