FCA Changes Motor Oil Spec

Today I was looking at for updates to the owner manuals. There are 3 manuals that got updated since I last looked. I was looking in the "Diesel-SU-7th" manual and noticed the spec for the motor oil changed. In the 6th_R1 manual it specified 5W-30 weight Pennzoil, and in the 7th revision it specified 5W-40 Mopar or Shell Rotella oil.

Has anyone else noticed this? I just had my oil changed 1200 miles ago.

I guess we need to buy 5W-40 now?

Also, the material standard is now MS-10902.

That's correct. They changed it last week. Should be a TSB coming out as well.

That's correct. They changed it last week. Should be a TSB coming out as well. You're able to finish out using the 5W-30 you have.

Re: FCA Changes Motor Oil Spec

Well Rotella is much available than the other two are at least in my area. I can usually get Rotella at Walmart for a great price.
Would be nice to know the why behind the change...

t6 is super cheap like $19 per gallon here! My STI loves it!

Shipping back to Amazon - when the reason for return drop down menu bar comes up, try using incorrect description as the reason....

Re: FCA Changes Motor Oil Spec

Does anyone know whether Rotella T6 is MS-10902 approved? I can't see it on the product or the official brochures.

Rotella T-6 is the one Chrysler is using as the standard now. Like if you go to the dealership and get an oil change that's what they will use...

Re: FCA Changes Motor Oil Spec

That is great news, Rotella T-6 is helluva a lot less expensive price for motor oil than the previously approved oils.

Re: FCA Changes Motor Oil Spec

There was an article in the TDR (Turbo Diesel Registry - a Cummins site) magazine a while back by John Martin. He is a retired chemical engineerthat was in the oil industry. HE evaluated new oil analysis of recommended oils for the ecodiesel and some standard oils. Basically, the euro spec oil emphasizes emissions equipment longevity over that of the engine and CJ-4, 5-40 is better for your engine and may not get the optimum life out of the after treatment crap. This is good news. Much better oil.
