First Long Trip MPG Results

Trip this Friday to STL from KC @ 75 mph but a slight crosswind and the EVIC showed 27.4 mpg (that's better than my CRD could do at that speed and having it at 2k rpm versus 2,700 as it would be in the CRD was really nice.

Trip back pulling an 7x14 enclosed v nose with a car inside it and parts and a comfortable 72 mph got 17.9 mpg. The only criticism was the need to downshift 2 gears to pull up some steeper hills. In my old CRD it was running such high RPM it never had to downshift which was nice but the drone of the engine buzzing that high was tiresome. A small tradeoff. I also did not take it out of ECO mode so wonder if that would have helped.

I think the WK2 is a little lower than the WK as when hooking up the same receiver to my trailer it was perfectly level where before with the WK it was tilted due to higher hitch height. However NO HITCH /RECEIVER BANGING NOISE!!! which was a big problem in my old WK even with a sheet of think aluminum which I fashioned to quiet it a bit. It also did a great job with stability as I was very impressed and looking forward to years of towing with this beast.

In about 2 weeks my next long tow will be from KS to NJ fully loaded (jeep packed and trailer as well).

Re: First Long Trip MPG Results

Is your GC diesel beyond 5k miles yet? I would expect closer to 30mpg @ 75mph constant speed, cruise set, unloaded on flat ground.

With an 8-speed, downshifting should occur more often to keep the motor at the right speed to deliver power without lugging. The ratios are a little closer and 8th is overdriven to the point that a large load would lug up a hill but not on flat ground. Lugging creates higher exhaust gas temps as well. The powertrain is doing what is should do. Your old CRD was revving high enough that a downshift would over-rev the motor.

You could paddle shift to 8th to prevent automatic downshifts. If you have an ODB2 monitor, you would see EGTs climb dramatically when loaded in 8th on an incline. The downshift and higher RPMs help lower EGTs.

I'd really enjoy some of sfu fuel you are running. I've never encountered a tank over 23 in MN. It's not bad..but I really don't understand the diff?

Yeah, I find it best to not be in eco mode when towing.

I wonder when you guys get your first tanks of summer diesel if ever? There really is a big difference.

Re: First Long Trip MPG Results

Just clocked over 2k miles so would expect increasing mpg. I also had a crosswind and I70 through MO is quite hilly that was affecting mileage and I was pretty aggressive on the throttle as was trying to make it to Urban Chestnut Brewing Company for dinner (great German beer and food). I highly recommend it if you are in STL anytime soon.

Re: First Long Trip MPG Results

Without pulling a trailer, our ecodiesel drops to 7th gear on a big hill during my daily commute, but it's still pulling fewer RPMs than the 2008 CRD was in 5th gear.

Re: First Long Trip MPG Results

I got over 30 mpg from Denver to Santa Fe including an excursion on the way last month. Just went from Denver to Lake Pueblo with the camper (R-Pod 172) and averaged over 20 mpg on 364 miles 20.4 actual, not in Eco mode, about 40 miles of the tank without the trailer.ImageUploadedByJeepGarage1401080787.878696.jpg

Re: First Long Trip MPG Results

I also want some of that diesel! I am running slightly larger tires, but get no where near your numbers. Colorado springs to Branson Mo, 800 miles avg 24 out, 22 back but into headwind. CO Springs to Pueblo res not towing only got my daily average from 21.8 up to 22.2.

Tires matter a lot. I am on the stock tires and run them at 39 psi. I noticed at 36 psi that my mileage was 2 mpg lower. What size tires and psi are you running?

Also, I'm at 320 ft elevation and fairly flat ground with lots of 60 - 70 mph highway miles.

Re: First Long Trip MPG Results

Tire pressures make a big difference. The lower they are the better grip you'll have at lower speeds but it creates more heat in the sidewalls of the tire from friction - thus lower mpg. Keep them at 40 psi all around and they will last longer and get you better mpg.
