A while ago I checked the level after it sat overnight, and it showed at the lower line. So I added a quart. Then I checked the next day and it was at the same level and I wondered why it didn't move up at all. Then I checked the stick again and it was over full. Any car I've had the most accurate reading is after it sits a couple hours, and the reading doesn't change after the first check of the stick a 30 seconds later.
My Mercedes did the same thing, always low on the first pull of the dipstick. After much contemplation I figured out why. The dip stick tube is below the oll line in the oil pan, running the engine will create a slight vacuum and it pulls the oil down a bit in the dip stick tube. It stays like that until you pull the dipstick and equalize the pressure, inserting again will show you the correct level. That's the best explanation I could figure out, might not be right but works for me.

Is the pennzoil platinum european ultra 5w30 at marine part hub for $42 for a case of 6 the right oil? The pennzoil website has it as ms 11106 compliant.

thanks vertrkr! If that's what is going on it certainly makes sense. hopefully it's a mystery solved!

Yes and it should be explained that way in the owners manual because the way it is now could easily cause owners to overfill their crankcase and cause damage, I know because I almost did before I read this thread. If I had had the oil available I would have mistakenly overfilled mine. I would bet that a lot of people have already overfilled theirs because of this anomaly.

To the Ozzies on the board,

The filters weigh next to nothing. Have you thought of buying, say, 6 of them them in the U.S. and getting them shipped out to you.
You can get them for U.S. $28.75 (about $32 OZ Dollars)

Re: First oil change – some info and comments

Just got what I feel is a screaming deal on oil changes at my Colorado Springs dealer. They had 4 changes for $319.00, or $79 per change. Even better, they entered it into the national network so I can get it changed anywhere.

Re: First oil change – some info and comments

Just got my first oil change. They said the oil filter number has changed again, from part # 68109834AA to the new part # 68229402AA. It took me several tries to reset the oil indicator, I wound up pressing the pedal 4 times instead of 3 and it reset. Got a free DEF fill with the deal too. Took 3 hours at the dealer, because they also installed 5 flash updates. Good for 10000 miles now (hopefully)

Shannon,

FYI - The original part number for the CRD Filter which WAS 68229402AA has been superseded to 68109834AA .
