Re: First oil change some info and comments

Had my 2nd oil and filter change done at my dealership today with 11,500 miles on the odometer. The first one was free. This one was $99.50 (10.00 labor, 36.00 filter, 52.00 oil, 1.50 shop supplies). Their parts department list the oil filter for 60.00 and the oil for 9.20/qt. They also included 5 gal of DEF at no charge. Since I have been told by the closest dealer an Ecodiesel oil/filter change cost them $154.00, I asked the Service Manager at this dealership how they can do all this for $99.50. He said they are losing money on the deal, but figure they'll make money in the long run expanding their customer base and loyalty.

Shell Oil owns Pennzoil and Chrysler has a worldwide purchase agreement with Shell. Apparently they buy it at a very good price. Chrysler wants the oil change business because it can bring loyalty and other expensive work to the shop. Not gouging on the oil price gets attention as noted by comments in this forum.

Chrysler may miss the boat on Uconnect control details, NAV map updates, and placement of the DEF injector, but they are making the right call on oil prices. I think they also want to ensure owners use the specified oil.

Re: First oil change some info and comments

Got my oil changed this weekend at the dealer with 3400 miles. They even asked me if I really wanted it done and I let him know I was at 11%. It was free and then I made sure to ask them if they used the Euro-L oil before I left. I'll be interested in seeing how they are priced next year when I'll have to pay (or do it myself). Be interesting to see since this is the same dealer that got all the texas group buy business and I would hope they'd be reasonably priced considering social media and forums like this one.

Re: First oil change some info and comments

Just wanted to check back and let everyone know that after the flash was done to my PCM, the oil life seems to be working as it should. I did a reset after the flash. I've driven about 350 miles and it has just dropped to 97%. Before that I drove about the same and the meter already marked 93%. So far it seems the flash helped. Now it seems to be working just like the 3.6L did when I had it.

Re: First oil change some info and comments

The FREE 1st oil change from the selling dealer @ 6589 miles, 9% oil life remaining - DISASTER
Appointment made on Monday for Friday service, rental/loaner requested and approved because of extended warranty contract - so far so good.
08:00 Friday: check in at dealer, oil change (1); check for steering vibration at speed, detailed with documents from tire shop (2), ok so far.
08:10 all our loaners are out, wait a few minutes and Enterprise car rental will pick you up.
08:26 cell phone rings (while at Enterprise), service department, we are sorry but we do not have an oil filter and they are on backorder, about to blow a cork, told them I would loan them my spare filter and deliver it at 10:00....
Off to work, boss hostile over me being later than anticipated.
10:00 sneak out to deliver filter to dealer - work-home-dealer-work 36 minutes.
16:00 Service department calls - all done.
16:50 after dropping off rental at dealer to pick up.
Oil change with top off of DEF free, dried DEF residue all over the rear quarter and tire - free.
Vibration - we documented it but 2 drivers could not find it.
Ready to leave: Oil Service Life Monitor not reset, different tech on his way out the door tried for 15 minutes, could not get it reset, told him i had to leave, after about 15 tries at home it finally reset.

20:00 at home reviewing dash cam video - scary.......
Tech did change the filter roughhousing things under the hood (air box and hoses to get to the filter), does not suck out residual oil in filter housing, consequently oil over the side of the engine and left motor mount.
Installs 5 (five) QUARTS of hopefully the correct oil, never checks the dip stick. I watched the video 3 times before going outside and pulling the dipstick - bone dry.

The vibration test drives where done after the oil change by 2 different techs, they actually behaved and drove pretty much the way I drive.

About 30 some miles with 5 qts in the crankcase instead of 8.

I will be at their door step at 07:45 in the AM, for the last ever visit to this dealer ship.

You do not know what you get if you don't do it yourself, or get it done by someone you trust.

Re: First oil change some info and comments

An oil change on the CRD is not difficult at all. I already bought all the parts and will be ready when our JGC is ready !

One note, reading the CRD Engine manual, they recommend cracking open the filter housing and allow it to drain before R&Ring the oil filter. This may be something that you could do in conjunction with draining the sump. Just crack it open and let it drain out, along with the sump oil.

I'll certainly be doing that when it's time for a change .

Being anal and all, I'd rather spend a few minutes doing an oil change and making sure EVERYTHING is done correctly.

Re: First oil change some info and comments

That sucks.

I changed mine myself. It wasn't hard at all.

On suctioning out the filter housing - I just let it drain then used a shop towel. Clean as a whistle and no big deal.

Re: First oil change some info and comments

First oil change today at the dealer at 8848 miles and 9% oil life remaining. Printed out the SB so they'd know to allow the oil to drain back into the engine for at least 30 minutes and to wrap a shop towel around the filter housing prior to removing the filter. Oil change went well; the parts department even showed me the eight quarts of Pennzoil Ultra Euro L 5W-30 they were using. I had to remind them to reset the oil life indicator, and they didn't top off the DEF tank, but I had added 2 1/2 gallons not long ago so it's over 3/4 full. No charge for the oil change; $18.38 for the tire rotation, but I had a $50 service department credit for purchasing the Jeep there, so they debited the $18.38 from my credit. All in all, not bad, except for having to wait for six hours.

Re: First oil change some info and comments

BearK9
You sure got a free oil change alright. I learned long ago watching a tech put transmission fluid in my engine to do these things myself. It didn't matter if it was the BMW dealership or Jeep or Ford I just don't trust these places any longer way too many mistakes and techs are paid for work done NOT by the hour.

PITA to do this? Of course but look at all the crap you had to put up with on a simple oil change and DEF refill. Simply not worth it to me at this point in my life.
Hope they correct this for you...

Re: First oil change some info and comments

I checked my oil today after the dealer service 3 days and 100 miles ago. The oil is dark and overfilled, they obviously did not wait the required 30 minutes for full drain. Back to the dealer on Monday.

Re: First oil change some info and comments

I'm currently at 5,000 miles and showing 15% oil life remaining which seems a little low to me based on the 10k mile service interval the OM suggests. I didn't actually expect to get to 10k miles but based on my driving I would've expected better oil life than this; I mainly commute to/from work 15 miles each way mostly highway, no towing or heavy duty use. Does this sound right? Anyone actually getting longer oil life?

My change oil light came on at 3000 miles. I had them apply the PCM TSB to it and that fixed the issue. Oil life seems fine now. I would suggest you take it to the dealer so they load the latest software for the PCM. That should fix it. It won't change the oil life indicator percent you see now, but the next go around of oil life will be in the 8-10k miles range.
