That's probably the best way to determine oil change intervals since everybody drives a little different and in a different environment.

Unless the testing needs expensive equipment, I wonder if it a service that dealers and oil change places could provide for a fee.

Re: First oil change – some info and comments

That is a good question. I prepay Blackstone for 6 analysis. It is cheaper for me but if a dealer would do it they would certainly qualify for a better discount...

Re: First oil change – some info and comments

My SFU nears 3K miles with 50% oil life. I've called my service department to schedule a 1st oil change next week. By that time I'll have about 3.5K on her. I've asked him to quote me on the job. He called me back and told me he made sure he has the low ash oil and the special filter in stock. The quote totals $130 including both material and labor. He even mentioned that the filter is a whooping $41. Pretty good deal considering the cost of the oil and filter.

At my dealer, Butler Chrysler in Beaufort SC., the first 4 oil changes during the first 2 years are free. I thought that this was a Chrysler policy rather than being specific to just this dealer.

I negotiated 3 (or maybe 4) oil changes/service contract on my new jeep when I priced and ordered.

My Infiniti was 2 years of free maintenance when I bought it.

That's not a Chrysler policy. Some Chrysler dealerships will throw in the 1st4in2 to get you to buy the car from them and return for service. This usually happens in locations where dealers are in close vicinity and is completely up to the dealership.

Re: First oil change – some info and comments

Oil filters will come down in price a lot as they look similar to the Mann filter on the Merc Jeep diesel. There is no reason for that high a cost for a cartridge filter worth maybe 6 bucks. Once we start getting quantity up the price should drop a lot.
Dealer price for the oil was $9.40 when I checked 2 weeks ago per qt and filter cost is $75.20 plus $41 is $116.20 which means the dealer sure isn't charging much to change the filter and oil...

Re: First oil change – some info and comments

I'm going back to the dealer for the first oil change on Tuesday. I called ahead and the service department guy says they have what it needs. I guess we will see what happens. My thought is... the service will be in their computer and warranty will not be an issue! I should be at about 3500 miles by then.

Re: First oil change – some info and comments

I saw the oil at 6 some odd a week or two ago when I was searching around. There are several that meet spec and in my searching the mobile was usually among the most expensive. Course shipping would add back into that but I'm figuring the dealer is getting the oil for less than I could possibly find it at anywhere. Course I'd love to be proved wrong and please include a link...
