If if it requires expensive equipment, they could probably make a couple bucks by taking the sample and sending it to a testing service for you, then return the results.
With enough business pass thru, they should be able to get a break on the testing lab charges in return for more business for everyone.

I'm about ready for second change, but I've noticed that after roughly 4-5K miles where there was a x-country trip at the end of that, the V8 doesn't appear to be using much oil at all. I was using a partial quart per thousand miles very early, but since 5K or so the dipstick hasn't hardly budged and I'm coming up on 13K

He called me back and told me he made sure he has the low ash oil and the special filter in stock. The quote totals $130 including both material and labor. He even mentioned that the filter is a whooping $41. Pretty good deal considering the cost of the oil and filter.
See if your dealer offers a discount if you prepay for 3 or more changes--several here do.

Re: First oil change some info and comments

That sounds like a pretty reasonable price netboy...

I found oil filters here which I think is the lowest so far..$27.75. ..though you'd probably have to order a few to offset the shipping charge to be worth it..

Repair Parts - Part #: (< I don't know why that link is showing front grills, but just fill in p/n 68109834aa and select Jeep model and it comes up)

I also learned something I was confused about with all these online Mopar parts places. They are the internet division of dealerships parts dept, but if you go there to the parts counter they wont give you that price. I called one parts desk because I recognized the address on the parts website (and the phone number they list on the site is different than the parts dept desk) and asked if that was their site and why is it lower online and couldn't I just come in and get it for that price. he said no, that's only the internet dept which we have to stay competitive and that the prices are so low that Chrysler reimburses them if they lose money at that prices....just relaying what he said. He said he couldn't honor those prices as a walk-in but to just order it online and have it shipped to me for that price. (the dealer above does have a local pick-up option when you select shipping type but it is an additional fee so you're still paying extra if it isn't a shipping charge)

And many of these places websites are nearly identical. here is another one:

Repair Parts: MoparOnlineParts.com

but if you need oil filters and/or anything else Mopar the prices are very good. (prices on the first link are a bit better than on the second link)

Re: First oil change some info and comments

I now have 5500 miles on my CRD. Even though the EVIC is showing 42% life remaining I decided to schedule an oil and filter change next week along with a TSB to replace my Uconnect antenna. My dealer quoted me $89.00 and he said they would sell me the oil at their cost, $5.00/qt. They had to order the filter and oil so I think I'll be their first CRD oil change.

Re: First oil change some info and comments

This discussion on oil changes has been interesting. My SFU is hopefully about to take its cruise from SoCal to me in Honolulu, where it will not see much long-distance driving.

I am curious, have any of you folks considered a Mopar Essential Care service plan for oil changes? After the F&I guy at the dealership tried to sell me something else, I did some research online and I was thinking specifically of a six year, 9-service, $0 deductible plan that offers the Penzoil Ultra oil, filter and lube (ECUS69N). The list price is supposed to be $410, or $45.56 per service if you use all 9 in the six years. That seems like an awful good deal if you can get it at that price.

The pdf I found online is a Chrysler service lane sales quick reference guide and it specifically says that it is "strongly recommended that dealers offer or sell the plan at Dealer Cost."

Any thoughts or experience with this plan?

Re: First oil change some info and comments

Double Check that this applies to the CRD engine as you need Pennzoil Ultra L for the new CRD motor, which is more expensive than plain old Ultra.

This is the Chrysler document on maintenance plans but it appears it was aimed at the old CRD motor and Cummins diesel engines.

The MSRP on the Oil according to WK2jeeps.com is $7.85 a quart. I got the Ultra L from my local dealer at a discount for $6 and something a quart. See post 39 in this thread.

Not positive about the ultra L vs just Ultra, but that plan is specifically for diesel motors. There are other plans for the gas motors that are not available for the diesels, but this one and others are listed for diesel powerplants (one is penzoil platinum, and two Rotella plans).

True, but what philbytx is trying to tell you is that not all diesels are alike. It's really not so much the diesel powerplant you need to worry, but rather the super expensive and complex emissions system that is unique to the 2014 EcoDiesel. Neither Penzoil Platinum, nor any Rotella oils are compatible with it. Using such oils will kill your DPF and might void your warranty.

In Australia we've had the diesel for 3 years now and the issue of the correct oil has been raised many times, and was linked to at the very start of this topic.
As Netboy noted, to get emissions compliance, this engine uses Exhaust Gas Recirculation and Particulate Filtering plus other systems. Chrysler specify a full synthetic, long life, very low ash oil, and in addition such oil should comply with (at least in Australia) their spec MS11106. This additional specification relates to a test where the ash residue left on a heated plate is measured. There are very few oils around that have been tested and claim approval to this specification. Again in Australia only one available does comply and that is Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W30. It is expensive.

Savvy owners out here very quickly found that many dealers were (and still are) using a one size fits all approach to the oils they used in changes, but charged the appropriate premium as if they had used a complying oil.

Those owners who do the research to obtain and fill with the correct oil will almost certainly avoid potential issues with clogging and buildup of residue in the heated parts of the intake system and the DPF.
There are plenty of horror stories around relating to these issues in various late model diesel engines in our part of the world.

Re: First oil change some info and comments

WK2OverlandII
I have checked with two different dealerships one in Ohio and one in Florida. Both quoted $9.40 per quart.
No where have I found the Pennzoil for less than $8.50 a quart. If you got it for 6 bucks you got a smokin deal because retail is what I posted.
I hope we can find something less expensive that still meets the spec.

I like the idea of the service plan if it is as inexpensive as what was posted above. I just don't think it will be since that cost is about 40 bucks less than dealer cost. Here is hoping someone proves me wrong and they do sell that plan for our CRD...
