Re: First oil change – some info and comments

Yeah I though it was a good deal so I purchased enough for two oil changes.... it was through a dealer in my home town in PA where my Dad retired from I got it a little above the dealer cost. The MSRP is $7.85 a quart (according to WK2jeeps.com)...I guess many dealers have it marked way up. Im active duty stationed in Ohio working at a College in South eastern Ohio....I haven't checked the prices around here.

Re: First oil change – some info and comments

I wonder if the BX carries any of this. They usually have the best prices and no tax.
Here is hoping anyone who finds either Pennzoil or Mobil for a good price will post where...

Re: First oil change – some info and comments

I dont know about a BX or PX if they would have it. I think Wal-mart would be able to get it but I dont know what the price would be. I would have to ask to see if they can order it in.

FIRST OIL CHANGE at Dealership
Mileage 3183 69% oil life remaining, DEF 50%

Charged
Labor: 8.09
Oil: 9quarts @9.59 each ( book says 8qt, and cold she is over the max)
Filter: 41.70
SD Tax: 8.16
Total: 144.21

I did not have them fill the DEF. This was not a bargain by anyone’s definition but it is all in their computer and that is what I wanted. Have a great day and enjoy the vehicle! I simply love this one.

What oil did they use? Also cold over the max isn't a good thing...as when synthetic oil gets hot it expands unlike conventional oil it burns,...synthetic has to be much hotter than the engine could get to burn. Therefore, when it expands it puts pressure on the seals and they tend to start leaking or blow out. Its better to be a little low on engine oil than over for this reason. Just my experience running on the autobahn.

Oil used: I only have a part # M1530ESPQ

I agree that over full does not make sense...

I don't know what the Q is but that is one of the two oils (Pennzoil and Mobil) that we can seem to get...

Wow! $144.21? Doesn't help that they charged you full retail for the filter.

I love mine as well, but if the price of our oil and filters doesn't decline, this vehicle will probably be the most expensive to maintain of any vehicle I've ever owned. Completely negates the money saved in fuel economy.

Oh well; just have to keep reminding myself that's the price of owning a vehicle with 420 lb./ft. of torque.

Thanks Netboy,

Neither Penzoil Platinum, nor any Rotella oils are compatible with it. Using such oils will kill your DPF and might void your warranty.
THIS is exactly why I posted it. At the moment, it appears we can only obtain Pennzoil Ultra L and M1 ESP in 5w30 which are compatible to the Chrysler Spec. Due to a few previous incidents (one of which was life threatening!), I am quite suspicious of dealership service departments and the competence of their employees and, thusly, will be doing my own oil changes. This will ensure that the oil filter WILL be changed, that proper low ash oils will be used and the sump filled with the correct fluid amounts!

Went to the site Shoestring provided for oil filters and picked 3 up. That with my oil should do me for 3 changes....

Re: First oil change – some info and comments

This Mobil 1 ESP formulation is being used to meet specs for some VW, M-Benz, BMW, and Porsche vehicles as well as this Chrysler diesel. As it becomes more widely used, perhaps volume production will bring the price down a bit. Or maybe increase competition, which could do the same. (We can hope.)

$100+ oil changes certainly rubs me the wrong way! However, figuring this expense against the fuel savings, the extra cost of diesel vs hemi still would be paid off in less than 1.5 years for me.
