It's not that the diesel is more caustic, its just more persistent on the skin. Petrol is more volatile and I therefore suspect evaporates off more rapidly leaving less residue and lingering smell. Diesel stays on the skin and smells for longer. I wear the
gloves to avoid stinking hands and transferring it all to clothes and car.

As Red said. Yesterday I thought I would try wearing just one glove while refilling DEF at a truck stop. If you've ever done this at a well-run location, you know the DEF filler nozzle is in an enclosed receptacle and the hose is on an insanely strong retractor. I unconsciously used my other hand to help pull the hose.

Instantly had black grease all over it.

Learned my lesson: I can get away with a single gloved hand while refilling diesel, but not DEF.

To OP: sorry for derailing your thread with my initial offhand comment. I didn't realize it would generate such discussion.

Roadkill,

Are you saying the DEF nozzle was dirty? I would advise against using DEF from a contaminated nozzle. A few parts per million of contaminant can taint our DEF causing chrystals.

No, the hose was dirty, which I found to be acceptable. The DEF dispenser was stored in a sealed enclosure, and the nozzle was clean via visual inspection. I would have failed the station if the nozzle looked awry or if the DEF dispenser weren't stored enclosed.

I guess that brings up another pseudo-irony: they make a big deal over capless fillers on these Jeeps, but the DEF filler right next to it has a cap. I would like to retrofit a capped diesel filler, like the OP described, if it works well.

We're lucky downunder, don't have the DEF, so only the diesel nozzle to deal with. One glove normally does the trick.

Too bad it wasn't as easy as swapping engine management computers to remove the DEF system

Fix for capless filler

Been real busy. But have been working here and there on it. I was going to do that whole plumber plug thingy with the t nut/wing nut to expand rubber for tight seal but the fuel door area is too tight for that. So just going to make a cap that plugs in but will have 2 o rings. One in the actually fill hole and one on the outer lip that will go over the whole area. So the green plastic diesel indicator around the fill area will need to be removed. There will also be a magnet in the plug nipple and kit will come with another magnet you double stick to the plastic door so you can stick it on door while filling. Here's a quick drawing of it. The nipple will actually be more inverted into the cap so that the outer lip can hang over the whole fill assembly more(1 of two orings, 2nd on plug nipple ) edit.. Actually the out lip will be deeper buy about 100% from this vid so that it hangs over the whole silver part

Fix for capless filler

So the magnet will more than likely be pressed in with some 3m hd epoxy. The magnet will live there forever. I was even considering to have a c clip holding it. Idk yet. For sure epoxy.

Also the outer lip will be 100-150% longer/ deeper as It will go over the whole fill unit ( whole silver area in picture two post ago, basically where my micrometer is measuring )
