Fuel Log Book: 20,000 Miles, 22.314 MPG Overall (Hand Calculated)

My CRD GC is my daily driver and my commute is a short one at 5-7 miles per day on city streets. Ever since Day 1 and Mile 1 I've logged every gallon ever put into it. Thought I'd share my data here. Here's a picture of the log book's current page:

ImageUploadedByJeepGarage1438158045.094611.jpg

Unfortunately that doesn't look like too decent a photo from my old iPad2. My rig just turned 20,000 miles the other day, and yesterday at 20,198 miles I filled the tank. It was my 50th fillup, so I'm averaging 404 miles per tankful. I love the GC's range.

So far here are some running totals (I keep a programmable calculator with the log book for the running totals and lifetime MPG):

. ► 20,198 total miles, 905.176 total gallons ==> 22.314 MPG overall, combined city/highway miles (short commute, 5-7 miles per day on city streets)
. ► $3,240.08 in total fuel costs ==> $0.1604 per mile in fuel costs (16.04 cents per mile) on expensive California fuel!
. ► 50 fillups ==> 404 miles per tankful, average
. ► 26.21 MPG: The highest MPG for an entire tankful was 26.21 MPG; 549 miles, 20.945 gallons.
. ► 17.91 MPG: The lowest MPG for an entire tankful was 17.91 MPG; 371 miles, 20.719 gallons.

I previously reported in another thread (here: Eco Diesel Mileage; post #155 in the thread)...

... that some excellent MPGs are achievable in our CRDs:

. ► 25 MPG at a steady-state 85 MPH
. ► 28 MPG at a steady-state 75 MPH
. ► 34 MPG at a steady-state 65 MPH
. ► 45 MPG at a steady-state 55 MPH

I have not yet gotten anything close to that for an entire tankful, but at some point in the hopefully near future I will go for it. I'd like to record getting over 30 MPG or better for 500 miles on a tankful, but it will take patience because I like to drive fast.

One final point: I get lower MPGs than I should because I do drive fast. On the highways I'm at 5-10 MPH faster than traffic, which in turn is 5-10 MPH over the limit where I drive, so I'm usually cruising at 80-85 in a 65 MPH zone. It's an old motorcycling habit, done for safety's sake.

Nice record keeping. I get 28-29 MPG for winter time and 29-30 MPG during summer time. My commute is weekday 42 miles combined. Half highway/half city. On the highway during summer time I get ~32 MPG during summer time with average speed on 60 MPH. During cold seasons the MPG drops to 29 under same condition.

NIce Record keeping.

I too drive it like a motorcycle...for safety sake

I'm at 35K miles. Drive 100+ miles mixed daily, With Roof rack, BFG Duratrac 32" and sliders.

I've observed:

30+mpg @65MPH highway when all stock

27-28mpg @ 60MPH

23-25mpg @ 80MPH +

Love this thing

Re: Fuel Log Book: 20,000 Miles, 22.314 MPG Overall (Hand Calculated)

Very impressive record keeping, may I suggest a smartphone app to replace that? For example, I use "Auto Care" on iOS and log all my fill ups, input the factory service intervals in so I will be reminded when I approach certain milestones, I take photos of receipts and store it in the app for mods and upgrades, etc...

Anyway, back on track. It amazed me when I first started driving diesels just how much mpg can swing. On my VW TDI I could range from 35mpg to 55mpg for a tank just depending on the trip lengths/accelerator usage/avg speed. Looks like it's the same for the GC.

Some folks get 23 and some get 32.

I use the Fuelly website(link in signature) to track my MPGs..works well and tells me how much the MPG meter lies in the Jeep.

Overall I cannot complain with the MPGs versus the prices of diesel and gas(93+ for my car, E85 when I can)

Re: Fuel Log Book: 20,000 Miles, 22.314 MPG Overall (Hand Calculated)

My rig is still new and I am logging a few miles as I work in our main office 2 days a week.
It is a 2 hr 334 km round trip so I avg 800 km /week. (Lets call it 500 miles)
I do not use on board computer but input all fuel/repair expenses into excel spreadsheet.
With 3500 km on the clock, we're average 34 mpg but mostly hiway runs @ 100-110 kmh .60-65 mph) AND running in econo mode. Range is 1150 km per tank (720 miles) so can do 3 runs to office per week and still have fuel for around town errands.
For conversion sake know that
1 gallon = 4.54 ltrs
1 mile = 1.6 kms
Diesel cost here fluctuates of course, but avg 1.05 /ltr of late
With a 93 ltr tank a fill costs $97.65 if totally empty
Divide that by range 1150 = .0849 cents / km
Convert to cost per mile...range 718.75 miles ...cost = .1358 cents / mile
Now ask me about my mileage allowance and you soon see a couple reasons why I
- made the switch from Jeep Wrangler (avg 18 mpg)
- opted for Ecodiesel over 5.7 Hemi
And of course the ride quality and luxo features...add to that the Jeep 4x4 capabilities and decision made.

That's true for a conversion based on imperial gallons. By comparison, 1 US gal = only 3.785 L, so 34mpg (imp) is equivalent to 28.3 mpg (US).

Re: Fuel Log Book: 20,000 Miles, 22.314 MPG Overall (Hand Calculated)

@farfromovin, @CNY_WK2: Thanks for the app / software DB suggestions. I took a look at some. They don't include some things that I like to track (ULSD flavor, oil level, others).

@thunderbolt, I might go your route and use Excel. Even better I might make it a Google doc so that it's centrally accessible and backed up. I would hate to lose my log book - if I did, all my data would be gone.

Yeah you guys are right, software is the way to go. My Dad used to write down a gas log on paper, and then I've done it with my very first car 35 years ago, but paper is paper. Thanks for the tip.
