Wow, this is really cool. These guys are right next door to me too! I should stop by to see how they are coming along with the tune.
Thanks for posting this, and Raven thanks for the info!

Re: Full custom tuning in the works

I just called them to set up a time on Friday for me to stop by and talk about the progress on the tune. They will call me back later, I'll keep everyone informed!

Re: Full custom tuning in the works

Ok, so I was able to stop over at CPS today and met with Nick. Nick is the owner of the company and a really nice guy. The Grand Cherokee diesel you see on his Facebook video is his wife's. Luckily, I doubt she visits JeepGarage so I can post what I found out about their tune.
We got to talking about the progress of his tune on the Jeep and he is coming along very well with it. They don't do a work-around module that tries to lie to the ECU to coax more horsepower and torque, they actually work on the ECU itself to make it act like it was meant to work this way. Their results speak for themselves, 50 Hp and about 70 ft-lbs gain, wow! They do not mess with timing or push the fuel system to its breaking point, they do change the way the ECU manages fuel. So far Nick has run this tune on his own Jeep for over 4000 miles without an issue.
Now for the good part! He offered for me to drive the tuned Jeep Overland and I have to admit I was impressed. It was like a completely different vehicle in a very good way. The throttle is a little touchy but I became used to it in the short time I drove it. Let me tell you the acceleration was quick, you would never think you were driving this heavy a vehicle. I didn't floor the pedal either, I may have pushed it half way or a little further. We left the Jeep in ECO Mode and the transmission shifted incredibly smooth. I normally dislike the ECO mode but with this tune it didn't matter.

Re: Full custom tuning in the works

Continued...
I kept EVIC on the active MPG gauge and his mileage was certainly better than my stock Limited Diesel, even with me pushing it whenever I could.
When we came back to his shop he gave me a tour. His shop is clean, well organized, and full of current customers' trucks (A good sign). I could tell you all about some of the projects I saw in there, but it would be hard to track you all down and kill you! J/K
What I can tell you is that Nick and his guys know their S@*# when it comes to diesels and he won't mess around with a second-rate tune.

They are not complete with working out the tune yet, they are waiting for supporting hardware to be accessible to the market. That means unfortunately they cannot offer their tune to people out of the local area yet. I live 20 minutes away from their shop so they can work on my Jeep where they know they can offer support. I have to talk to the wife and make sure she is OK with me letting them work on the Jeep. We'll see how good of a salesperson I am.

I drove away from my meeting with Nick at CPS in my standard, boring ol' diesel. I felt like I went from a rocket powered version to a slow one, and before today I was quite happy with the performance.
If you do live in the Chicagoland area give CPS a call at 815-568-7920, they are nice to deal with.

Post questions about what I saw on this thread and I will either answer them myself or email Nick to ask him.

P.S. I told Nick about Jeep Garage and about some of the issues people have had with their diesels. Who knows, maybe we'll see more of them on here.

Re: Full custom tuning in the works

Great stuff Matt!!! Thank you so much for doing this.

Did he mention anything about when it might be available?
Any word on pricing?
Would someone (not local) have to send their ECU to him?
Could the tune be detected by the dealer?
Is there any control by the user to switch between stock and the modified tune?

Thank you!

BadTA,

I can answer some of your questions, the others I will have to ask.
He could not say when it would be widely available because he does not have a firm date on the hardware at this time.
Yes, someone who is not local would have to send him the ECU because of the way he does the proper tune.
I asked the question about the dealer detection. It is possible to detect the tune if they ran a detailed scan and compared numbers to stock. I personally think this to be very unlikely to be done on a Grand Cherokee vs. say a pickup that is very commonly tuned.

When I get the answers to your other questions I will let you know.

Not 100% sure for Jeeps, but for other makes, this is DEFINITELY the case - meaning that a quick scan will tell the dealer that the ECU has been re-tuned beyond factory specs (basically runs a check-sum).

They do this whenever there is a code thrown and the dealer wants to do some checking before beginning a repair. The problem is that you might be flagged in the dealer database as having a tune, which might disqualify you for warranty work on the drivetrain. Best is to find a dealer that you trust and won't lose their sh!t when you bring in your tweaked ride.

Re: Full custom tuning in the works

Really that should only be an issue if they determine that the tune some how caused whatever issue you're having. If you bring it in for a suspension squeak or something unrelated it shouldn't matter if you're tuned... According to the Magnuson-Moss act iirc.

Re: Full custom tuning in the works

Cant wait for someone to finally get a tuner finished and to market! I live in Minneapolis, probably a little to far from Chicagoland to have them tune the ecu directly and not have a handheld tuner to revert back to stock as needed.
