Yeah, it sounds great because the Mazer uses an external speaker (!!!) to pump up the sound. The sound normally coming out of that engine was too quiet and not sports-car enough for typical buyers. And yes, it gets made fun of just as BMW and Audi does for their fake engine noises in the interior.

Re: Full custom tuning in the works

Also, the regular gas Maser does use active valving to bypass the restrictive muffler. Happens under full throttle or when put into sport mode. It actually sounds like ass if you ask me.

With the TURBO, DPF and CAT obstructing exhaust flow, our diesels will NEVER be loud even if you cut the mufflers off. Now deleting the DPF/CAT/MUFFLERS and straight piping it...that would open up the sound.
Thanks. The sound I've heard on the master isn't loud, more throaty like a burble. I wondered if it was actually a speaker or some kind of active valving. My old z4 had a"sound generator" that plumbed air into the cabin from the intake for some exciting noise. I've followed the talk on the blue spark but was curious if there was anything non electronic that could be borrowed from the maser; I'll assume not. I'm admittedly ignorant on such things which is why i asked here.

I doubt there are many mechanical differences inside the motor other than the piezo injectors vs. the solenoid ones we have. The plumbing is different too...but I suspect the extra 30 hp is mostly due to tuning. That's a good thing because we can benefit from that also.

Re: Full custom tuning in the works

My BRZ has as sound tube that runs off the intake into the passenger side of the cabin to increase sound in the car as the square flat four is really silent in stock trim. But it's easy to fix and get some sound back by simply adding a muffler delete pipe and an intake (none of which I've done).

Gotcha. I guess I was thinking intake/exhaust parts but I didn't realize they had an actual speaker tucked away making the sound. I'm still a little shy regarding a real tune due to the warranty booklet warning that everyone has spoke of. I'm actually pretty happy with the getty-up of the truck but I hate the turbo lag when I need to pull out into traffic; I'm usually already in the lane before the turbo spools up- very unwieldy.

I saw on Top Gear last season they reviewed a hot hatch (Renault or Peugeot maybe) which played engine noise through the speakers and you could choose which sound track you wanted to listen to, from a Porsche rattle to a Ferrari burble. I guess if the ladies are impressed enough to be distracted from our other shortcomings it doesn't matter where the sound is coming from.

With no offense intended and said with a half smile, I believe you are deceiving yourself if you think we do anything without the common denominator that influences our decision being how we will be measured and weighed by our ladies.

All that said, I do think putting a speaker in the exhaust is about the most ludicrous thing I've ever heard on a supposed 'super car'.

HARLEY.
I think you made my point for me. After reading the article below, I think I've changed my mind on the 'active sound.' Where do I sign up for my exhaust speaker?

Too bad that is a different engine. That "cat calling" block is the gas V-8 from the Quattroporte. Interestingly, lots of studies since then have confirmed the source of the effect is a very low frequency hum that happens to be generated by the engine/exhaust setup of the Maserati QP. They think it might be related to some evolutionary mating call of our ancestors. It is just a matter of time before that frequency is amplified via a special "options package" add on for every car coming off the factory floor...
