Re: Future showdown?

I believe the price point on the LR would keep the GC safe from any serious threat to their market.
I also read that Jeep is planning another larger model to add to the lineup .. a ressurrection of the Wagoneer nameplate and will offer 3rd row seating which is aimed art the Chevy Suburban buyers perhaps.
The Jeep Patriot and Compass will be dropped from the lineup which is (in my opinion) a good move.
Not really good representative of the brand.

Re: Future showdown?

I cross shopped a little, mainly becausef LR's 4X4 reputation. They're very pricey, and yes there's also the reliability concern.

x2 on that. As a former Jag owner absolutely never again. We like to complain about our GCs here but that is absolutely nothing compared to what a luxury British car will put you through. And FYI - no, you don't automatically get a loaner from all dealerships and there are no manufacturers extended warranties (unless this has changed in the past several years, it is all 3rd party).

And FYI, I absolutely did cross-shop these cars.

Plus diesel prices aren't exactly drooping as much as gas in the USofA.

If the guv't truly wanted to encourage diesel higher efficiency, this would be trivial to solve--but only if we were to outsource the entire congress to a country with a brain.

Glad to see more competition. The LR4 is nice, as is the Range Rover. They are being hit at the lower end by the Grand Cherokee, and are about to get hit at the high end a bit by the Bentayga and the rumored smaller unit, the hopefully Maserati, etc.

The Discovery was so bad it was renamed the LR3/4 to try to fool buyers.
The newer ones are allegedly much better, thanks to the Ford years allegedly.

Re: Future showdown?

Aesthetically - beautiful. Love it.

Reliability and their customer service is putrid. I'd never own one.

And as mnay others pointed out, the price point doesn't compare.

This was a BIG problem when his wife shifted into Park and couldn't put it back in Drive with her foot on the brake. Had to have it towed on a specialized flatbed (expensive), diagnosted by the dealer (even more expensive), and "repaired" by trained technicians to maintain his warranty. All over a 99-cent light bulb.
At least the light bulb appears to have been a generic 99 cent light bulb.
Try to buy a minor part for a Porsche.

By the time you get into a zooted up Overland, you are at roughly half the price of a Range Rover. Land Rovers are not as expensive as Range Rovers.

If you poke back thru threads, there are lots of us who cross shopped the Rovers only to pick the GC as a better value--so did Motor Trend for a Summit vs Rover.

Lucas, Prince of Darkness.

I actually shopped the Range Rover...

But, many of them now seem to be owned by folks with tatas, or who are big fans of tatas.

C'mon, think out of the box. These days, you could use a plastic anti-ding covering [like the old ZJ only bigger] that is fairly thick and actually looks exactly like your choice of wood grain. Actual wood would also work, but the radiated plastic impregnated stuff that is tougher than plastic probably would not be socially acceptable.

Re: Future showdown?

As much as I agonize over potential problems with my EcoDiesel, I suspect they will pale in comparison to my 4 years of owning a LR Discovery. While the vehicle was very capable offroad, I was literally at the dealer every month getting something repaired under warranty. LR treats customers like royalty, but I don't have the time to go to the repair shop every 4 weeks.
