Future showdown?

The diesels are coming! The Land Rover diesels are coming!

I see some some great challenges from our opponents from across the pond! Diesel versions of the Land Rover Sport are coming and will give the Jeep GCs a run for their money. I looked at the LR4s before buying the Jeep and found them to be pretty nice, but a little stuck in the past (maybe that is intentional I'm thinking.) In any event it will nice to see some good-natured rivalry in the "classy off-roader" segment.

Re: Future showdown?

I to looked at a LR4 prior to buying my eco-diesel. The fuel economy numbers were dismal at best, and that was the only limiting factor. If the Land Rover had a diesel, I think I would've been swayed. I wish the forthcoming Discovery sport would have a factory diesel option. I'm just not sold on petrol engines anymore.

Re: Future showdown?

Land Rover have at least two diesel Discovery 4 engine options. I'm surprised that the US market don't see them... the petrol versions don't make much sense to me either!

Cheers,
Steve

Re: Future showdown?

Yup, if the Sport had been available with a diesel option when I bought my Jeep I most likely would have gone that way instead.

Re: Future showdown?

no thanks! I'll stick with Jeeps solid reliability!!

Well, with the Rover I'd at least get a Loaner when it's in the shop.

Re: Future showdown?

I think they will be much more expensive, too. Prob mid $70s when similarly outfitted to the JGC. Also, reason that there have not been too many diesels in the States is because most manufacturers couldn't comply with our restrictive emissions requirements until recently.

Re: Future showdown?

I actually had a deposit down for a Tesla Model X. Since Tesla delayed the car, I canceled and got another Jeep. A few of my friends have Land Rovers and Range Rovers and I would not want to have the problems they have had in the past. One of them has had the car in the shop once a month. Everything from head gaskets to rear main seals leaking. So far I'm extremely happy with my Jeep. 1000 miles and averaging 28.2 MPG.

Re: Future showdown?

A buddy of mine with an old Discovery had problems all the time, too. Stupid problems. Like when a tail light burned out - which was somehow wired *in series* to the brake petal switch, meaning the car wouldn't register when you were hitting the brake. This was a BIG problem when his wife shifted into Park and couldn't put it back in Drive with her foot on the brake. Had to have it towed on a specialized flatbed (expensive), diagnosted by the dealer (even more expensive), and "repaired" by trained technicians to maintain his warranty. All over a 99-cent light bulb.

Re: Future showdown?

Don't the LRs and RRs cost roughly twice as much as Jeep?

Re: Future showdown?

If you spec them up the prices get scary real fast!

Re: Future showdown?

Trying to figure out what is comparable. I don't think many people cross shop RR / LR to Jeeps that often. RR / LR buyers are probably looking more at comparable BMW / Benz or Cadillac SUVs or even luxury sedans. The price points put the WK2 agains the LR Disco Sport but the LR is smaller but can come with a 3rd row (why doesn't jeep offer this option?). Disco is more of a compact sized vehicle that can only tow 4,500 lbs and comes with an 18.5 gallon tank. I can't imagine how often you have to fill that little tank as RR / LRs get miserable fuel mileage in the first place (again they are a luxury mark not an economy one).

LR4 seems to be the most comparable but starts at $50k. Built one up and it's about $55k comparable features. I'm seeing the WK2 diesel as an absolute bargain!

A funny thing about the GL class MB suvs - they come standard with the diesel and the gas v8 is an option / extra upgrade.

Re: Future showdown?

Would never own a LR or any other British influenced car. They were one step from death until Ford bought them. Now that they are owned by TaTa from India they are just real expensive British cars with what still seems to be lots of issues. Any of my grocery getter friends that has one are constantly back to the dealer for all kinds of issues from electrical to mechanical....

There's a reason the British drink warm beer....they have Lucas refrigerators. That was the saying way back....
