G.C. with Mercedes diesel VS Italian Eco-diesel

Just wondering if any current Eco-diesel owners previously owned the G.C. with the Mercedes diesel engine and if so, noticed any differences between the two engines i.e., performance, noise, etc (big or small differences)....

I previously owned a 2008 G.C. with the Mercedes diesel and am currently contemplating purchase of the 2016 G.C. with the Eco-diesel (the diesel in Canada is only available in either the Overland or Summit).

We still have our 2008 with the Mercedes and we now a 2015 with the Italian VM Motori engine. It’s probably too soon to do a good comparison, but I like them both and we’re getting much better gas millage with the new 2015’s VM Motori engine - about 18% better. I think that has much to do with the new transmission which I’d say is very good. You can easily feel the added torque on the 2015 compared to the 2008 which makes it feel more sporty.

I was a bit worried about the new transmission before we purchased our 2015 because other 8 speed transmissions I tried with several rental cars were not so great. I am very happy with the Jeep's 8 speed transmission.

They are both about the same as far as noise level standing outside, but from inside the vehicle I’d say the 2015 is much quieter. The sound deadening efforts for the passenger compartment is definitely better with our 2015 Overland vs. our 2008 Limited.

Other than the DEF injector problems folks are complaining about, I’m very pleased with the 2015. We have yet to have any problems with the DEF injector, but I installed one of DOM’s plates in addition to the new factory plate on the late model 2015’s. You can search my other posts for some photos.

Overall I'd say the 2015 with the VM Motori engine is a step up.

Re: G.C. with Mercedes diesel VS Italian Eco-diesel

In some ways I miss my Mercedes CRD. I drove it to the of 120k before upgrading to the 2014. The OM diesel just sounded more like a diesel to me, but the quietness of the VM is also equally enjoyable. If the 2008 would of had one more gear in the transmission it would of been all the better. That being said however, the bladder busting long range of this new diesel/transmission combo is beyond words.

Yes, I would agree with you regarding more gears in the transmission... Jeep was a little slow in upgrading the tranny compared to competitors like the Mercedes ML 350 diesel...

lol... if you are 'complaining' about the quietness of the VM diesel, that's a good thing!

In some small way I may be. I actually like they way it sounds at first start up in the morning - nice purr(rattle). But at the pumps filling up I have to blip the throttle to see if it's running if a 12v Cummins is parked next to me

A quiet diesel is a golden diesel. Precious and rare. Feel blessed my friend. LOL

Re: G.C. with Mercedes diesel VS Italian Eco-diesel

Went from a '07 WK CRD to an '14 WK2 Ecodiesel as well. Things I miss from the WK is that GDE had a portable tuner so I can swap between OEM and GDE tunes (this was all after warranty when I did this to reduce emissions related failures). I did not miss the highway cruising in my WK as the transmission in that vehicle was a 5 speed from the SRT8 (as the Hemi's transmission couldn't handle the torque). So on the WK the acceleration was fantastic and after the tune I would surprise many mustang or camaro owners from a stop light. However with transmission geared for a performance gas engine the RPMs on the highway were almost unbearable when simply keeping up with traffic at 75 mph I'd be running 2,700 RPM for hours. The WK2 with the 8 speed hums along at 1,800 RPM at the same speed. MPG in the WK2 is also much better as I would be lucky to get 30 mpg on the highway in my WK even with the GDE tune. Now I'm getting 34-35 mpg highway in the WK2. This is running 65 mph speed limits and not tail gating.

Yes, my 08 G.C. with the Mercedes diesel took off like a rocket when passing on the highway.. great highway vehicle but like you say, could have been better with a new tranny... good engine though and I think it would last a very long time...perhaps outlive the vehicle itself...

I had almost $14,000 of warranty work done to my Benz engine at 65,000 km......turbo and fuel pump...oh ya.....and that included $165 for a tie rod end.
Fuel economy got progressively worse the faster you went. The '15 is substantially better with the 8 speed.....still has funky shifts like the '08 though.
I do miss how it steered straight and didn't shake though!

Is this an issue with the new chassis? The air bag suspension? I'm noticing a big difference in steering and shaking on the '15 GC compared to the '14 Cherokee. I think a part of it might be the steering by wire (electric) on the Cherokee made for a smooth steering wheel, while the GC direct connection makes the steering wheel shake and rock back and forth with every bump or crack in the road that the tires hit.
