Looking to see what the real world Tire Loading and Payload stickers (driver's door frame) are.
What is your sticker's payload?
Trim and major options make a difference. Name them please.
I am looking at a diesel Limited 4 WD with no sunroof most likely.
My 27' travel trailer (1966 Avion) has about a #700 tongue weight (includes a ProPride hitch) and the trailer is about #5,000 (actual weights - CAT scale) not factory "guesstimates"!
Am I hoping too much here.....?
And, I don't need advice on axle ratings and how the stickers are BS....
Have 2014 limited diesel 4x4 without a sunroof, with off-road I, trailer tow and navigation. Mine is rated for 6800# with 18x8 wheels. I pull a all-aluminum 7x16 wedge nose(7x19) that weighs 1990#, and has 2014 Polaris Ranger 6x6 inside that weighs 2560#(w/accessories). Real world mileage is a respectable 16mpg @ 65mph(7th gear). I am manually shifting gears too.
Or, 2 adults and baggage / gear (though it can go in the trailer)
Hence the "squeeze". I can hit right at limits with nothing beside 2 passengers and some gear inside, but I prefer a buffer........
Lots of folks pulling travel trailers / trailers and over payload on the tow vehicle. (1/2 ton pickups especially, yikes!) I try to not be in that group though.
Really would like to have a tow vehicle that fits in a "regular" garage though........trade-offs / decisions / and $$.
Any data from the hitches themselves as far as tongue weight limitations?
The OP indicated he is considering a GC Limited diesel 4WD. According to this summary the payload for that vehicle configuration would be 1270 lb — the largest payload of any configuration.
Jeep's towing calculator does not include tongue weight, but there's a note under the calculator that says this:
The recommended tongue weight is between 10 & 15% of the trailer weight. However, the maximum tongue weight on Class III (The bumper ball) is limited to 500 lbs, and Class IV (The receiver hitch) to 1200 lbs. This requirement overrides any recommended GTW rating, between 10% and 15% of gross trailer weight (GTW). Additionally, the GAWRs and GVWRs should never be exceeded.

Believe the #1,200 hitch limit for a Class IV setup is with a weight distributing hitch (which I have). Interesting that the Jeep website referenced for towing and payloads shows "Class III"...?
What I have seen in other makes, and why I requested actual payload sticker values, is a somewhat material difference (2 to 3 hundred pounds sometimes) in what is published as "maximum" payload and what actual units have stated on the yellow payload sticker. (See Jason911's value of #1,050 as an example) I would guess this is impacted by options and tires...
I was thinking of optioning with the Off Road II with no nav., so pretty close to Jason911's setup. Appears the different driveline components will change paylaod as well.........
Thanks again folks - post up the values / optons if you would.
from the diesel supplement (excuse the poor formatting):
Engine Model Frontal Area Max. GTW (Gross
Trailer Wt.)
Max. Trailer Tongue
Wt. (See Note)
3.0L Diesel 4x2 55 sq ft (5.11 sq m) 7,400 lbs (3 357 kg) 740 lbs (336 kg)
3.0L Diesel 4x4 55 sq ft (5.11 sq m) 7,200 lbs (3 266 kg) 720 lbs (327 kg)
it seems to me Jeep is just taking 10% of max trailer weight and saying that's that max tongue, which is fair enough since we all know that the hitch is the same between 4x2 and 4x4.
I don't understand the disconnect between the max payload published on jeep's website and the tire and loading sticker on my jeep. I have a limited and the website claims the max payload is 1270. the tire and loading sticker is 1050. did options add 220 lbs to my Jeep? I guess i'll have to tell my second child that he can't come because I needed skid plates and a sunroof. I have lux2, ora2, nav. are the skid plates in the ORA2 package that heavy? maybe the large sunroof adds weight? maybe the diesel is heavier than the V6? either jeep takes into account the extra weight from my options or the stock tires/rims can't support it. does anyone have any insight on tires/rims being involved in payload capacity? I only mention it because the GVWR sticker with the separate ratings for each axle reference what size tires the stock car came with.
After seeing the diesel supplement info from Timo13's post, There is a glimmer of hope left.
Though there is usually a sticker on the receiver hitch stating the hitch's actual max ratings - which I would hope would exceed the diesel supplement values...
IMHO - 10% of trailer weight is a "bit" light for travel trailers, but again, payload will run out before a max trailer weight is approached.
I can trim the tongue weight a bit (propane and fresh water), and am still far under the max trailer weight and GTG with the frontal area aspect.................
RE: Actual payload versus published "max" figures:
"Max" is the key word, usually derived from a non-optioned (nothing added to the trim base equipment), base equipped unit in that trim level.
Options above that level eat into the available payload:
Sunroof (heavy) and skidplates - most definitely.
Tires & Wheels - I bet they are not the limiting factor, tire ratings are on the tires, wheels are stamped with such sometimes....
Most folks just look at max trailer weights and away they go..........
