I don't get how they got 15mpg running WFO the whole way up. I'd think (based on what my instant mpg shows that it would be lower).

I got close to 15 MPG towing 7200 Pounds in mixed driving and hills. The instant makes it seem higher but the math proves it out.

i noticed these guys subtracted the tongue weight from the max payload capacity, which makes sense. Is this normal practice? So since the limited has a payload capacity of 1270 (the overland is 1170), I'd only have 705 pounds left for my family.

1270 (total)-565 (trailer)-70 (dog)=635 for family and cargo. i guess i'm a little disappointed that this would leave an average weight of 4 people at 159 or 5 people at 127 with absolutely no cargo. once the kids get bigger i guess I'm giong to have to lose a few pounds, or sell the dog.

That is exactly how tongue loads are calculated against GVWR/Payload on the truck.

Jeep actually is higher than the competition in this area. My ML320 had a max tongue of 575 and you could figure out why when you looked at the low payload and rear axle capacities.

I have a Summit, and the problem is even worse. Max payload is 1050, which typically leaves me, after accounting for me and one passenger, with about 325 pounds for cargo, give or take. It's one of the trade offs with getting an SUV (not just a Jeep in particular) to do double duty as a family car and a hauler. It's really easy to overload an SUV once you put weight on the tongue.
