Harsh 1-2 shift in sport mode

I've noticed since I got the Jeep there is a harsh 1-2 up shift in sport mode. Mostly in slower takeoff situations. Got the latest tcm flash a couple months ago and no improvement. Anyone else notice this? Other than that it shifts good.

I should also note that this doesn't occur in normal or eco shift mode.

Re: Harsh 1-2 shift in sport mode

It changes the shift pattern when it is in sport mode. Which is why you have a harder shift. Hope that helps.

Re: Harsh 1-2 shift in sport mode

Thanks. This is more than a hard shift though. It's a noticeable hard bump forward even when giving it a small amount of throttle. Only in sport mode.

Re: Harsh 1-2 shift in sport mode

That is normal function. The programming is expecting stronger throttle input and changes the speed of the shift pressures resulting in a firm shift. Unless you are driving it hard makes little sense to use sport and drive easy.

Re: Harsh 1-2 shift in sport mode

My 1-2 in sport mode on the SRT is pretty violent now as well after the most recent tranny upgrade. I'm ok with it now though... took some getting used to...

Re: Harsh 1-2 shift in sport mode

I'm trying this now - sport mode, light acceleration. The 1-2 shifts are smooth, gentle, normal. Violent is not a word I would use here. EcoDiesel, 2014.

Sounds like you have a problem needing inspection. Good luck.

I have an SRT and it happens under hard acceleration. Probably a bit different from what you are experiencing for sure...

Might explain things here. If I'm hard on it I don't have the harsh bump in sport mode going 1-2

My 2015 3.6 Pentastar has a more 'solid' feeling shifts in Sport mode. I never noticed a difference in my '14 Hemi.

Re: Harsh 1-2 shift in sport mode

Overall while I believe in this transmission and it hasn't let me down, it is one of the more herky jerky trans I have ever had at low speeds, even with all updates....
BUt overall it performs well and I don't let little quirks bother me....

Re: Harsh 1-2 shift in sport mode

Sorry for bringing back an old topic, I didn't want to create a new thread since it is a bit related. I have a base model Grand Cherokee, so I've got the 3.6 VVT.

I only drive in sport mode, or S {-] [+}. While I understand this is a driving mode, I have a hunch that most drivers do not solely drive in this setting (any engine choice/model).

I guess what my question is, say you have racked up 90,000 miles on a Wk2. The engine is worn, the tranny is worn, it's just how things go. Could throwing the vehicle into sport be the straw that broke the camel's back so to speak? I've heard many debates about whether or not using sport mode too often will increase engine wear (I stand with an opinion that regular driving at higher RPM's/lower gears will tend to, well, speed up the wear process). But I'm not going there. My question is more so, with how quick this transmission shifts, and how eager the engine is to hit high rpms, would the use of sport mode on a higher mileage Grand Cherokee be somewhat of a no no?
