Re: Highest mileage 2014 that has never had a P20EE/SCR cat issue?

The title of this thread implies that a P20EE/SCR cat issue is inevitable if we drive far enough. Does anyone know of a credible estimate of the incidence of this problem, and whether there is any evidence that the proportion of problems reported is more correlated with distance driven than other factors (like age, build date, driving conditions, etc., etc.)?

For the record, my June-2014 build summit has been trouble free, but so far has only driven 8500 miles.

Re: Highest mileage 2014 that has never had a P20EE/SCR cat issue?

2/14/14 build date.
19987 miles including around 5k towing a TT.
No issues whatsoever. Dealer did TSB's/reflashes when I took it in for a tire rotation. Didn't change anything....still running like a champ and getting great mileage.
With DEF, I've filled up twice from Pilot truck stops.

Lots of speculation, but no one knows what factors are involved. My P20EE came at 13,700, went off by itself and hasn't (yet) returned. I'm at 15,300 now. I'm a Feb 14 build. Some with older build dates than me have had no issues.

I'm not even sure if the 2015s are immune or if they just haven't been driven far enough yet.

Far from it. In fact, the less-than-subtle insinuation in the thread is that I don't believe it's inevitable (despite the echo chamber belief to the contrary). I think we have selection bias in our reported failures, which is why I wanted to elicit counterexamples.

However, if you're looking for scientific rigor (e.g. a cohort study), then really the only entity capable of doing that is FCA with their warranty claim data... and I doubt that info is forthcoming.

The best surrogate for our purposes then becomes to elicit cases of long-term nonfailure. The more reports we have, the less likely it is that Occam's Razor would suggest that these owners have magically durable cats vs. the null hypothesis that cat death is *not* inevitable.

So, keep the "no cat issues" reports coming in, folks!

Another thought to mull on. Seems to me that the late build and less drove miles may be less susceptible to the catalyst failure. My thinking is that the early models had more miles drove on the software that used more DEF. The service bulletins lowered the DEF dosing which was hooked would solve the P20EE problems. I think by the time the first one came out our was too late for the early builds with higher mileage, the damage was done. Several revision of the tsb later and the catalyst replacement came out which was just before Christmas. I think the lower miles you had and the Skinner the tsb's were applied may have led to the saving of some of the unicorns. That's just my thought.

Re: Highest mileage 2014 that has never had a P20EE/SCR cat issue?

Keep the reports coming, folks!

I (would like to) believe that most JGCs have been free of the P20EE code. I expect that it's the nature of internet forums to elicit complaints from those with problems, while most who are trouble-free are out there living their lives and enjoying their JGC CRDs and not worrying about posting to message boards or researching problems.

Therefore it is possible that people find this forum and say, see, look at all the Diesel GCs with problems! When that likely isn't the case.

I am very happy for those who have not had this problem. A little jealous, too, but I knew statistically speaking that the likelihood of problems was a tad higher with the new engine, trans, electricals and computer controllers. I took the risk, have had some problems, but am still a happy owner who loves this rig.

So... Keep the reports coming, folks!
