Re: Incorrect DEF - See dealer

Add another member to the "incorrect DEF See Dealer" club. I have been getting the P20EE code for a while now. It was cleared but then came back along with the P2BA9 code and the incorrect DEF - 200 miles until no re-start message. I guess I was fairly lucky - the dealer I took it to replaced the SCR catalyst (performed TSB-18-045-14) in one day. I took it in on a Tuesday morning and got it back Wednesday afternoon. Evidently they have been having enough issues where they have started to stock the new SCR cat.

I have 22,800 miles and up until now I have been trouble free. The guy at the dealership told me they have actually seen more of the Ram trucks with this issue than the Grand Cherokee's. I appreciate all the feedback from the guys on this site. I was prepared to deal with the service guys due to everything I read here. I did not want to go back and forth until they finally replaced the SCR catalyst. To their credit they went straight to what is hopefully the long term fix. They also cleaned the DEF system and filled up the DEF tank. I guess my DEF injector pump tested okay becasue they did not replace it. They did all of the new software flashes as well.

I love the Jeep so far - not a huge fan of all the Diesel emmisions controls required by the EPA though. I think all of the major car companies are having issues with the diesel emmisions controls, but I don't think they are happening this quickly.

Re: Incorrect DEF - See dealer

Mine has been in the shop for a week now. This is the 3rd time. I'm done with it. They day it gets out of the shop I'll be getting in an Overland Hemi. What a finicky POS the diesel is.
A big shout out to all the spineless lawmakers/EPA/auto manufactures/tree huggers and those who support them.

That is true! Besides the Hemi or the Hellcat motor, it's too bad THAT one wasn't an option! Hehe!

Re: Incorrect DEF - See dealer

Well it finally happened. After 16858 miles got the "Incorrect DEF--see dealer" message. Took it into the dealer and got an immediate tongue lashing for using PEAK DEF. This was for a 9:40 AM appointment. They didn't actually look at the Jeep until after 2PM--left me out in the waiting room until then and then called me on the cel phone--apparently forgot I was there even though the service advisor walked past me at least 5 times. When he called me he berated me for using out of date DEF. I said since I was out in his waiting area I would come to the service bay. He got the mechanic and we walked over to the car where I had kept the PEAK DEF container with the box it came in. The service tech looked at the box and showed me the Wal-Mart shipping tag which reads 9-15-15 and told me the DEF had expired. I then went on a rant as I know full well the batch # is on the jug--PB161221165--which tells me the DEF was batched in late August of this year. Also told him I have a refractometer which I bought specifically to check DEF quality prior to putting it in the Jeep. Told him this batch of DEF checked OK with the refractometer. Demanded that they start a STAR case on this. By the way, I never keep much DEF in the tank as I know it can go bad with time and heat. Usually only fill 2.5 gal at a time. They are now going to drain and clean the DEF tank and I know they are just itching to stick me with the bill. No flashes have been done that have anything to do with DEF system. Short of getting a lawyer, any suggestions to remedy this situation are appreciated. Have had other issues with this Jeep resulting in over 10 days in the shop. Here in NJ lemon law requires 20 days within first two years. Don't know whether I will make that cutoff.

Re: Incorrect DEF - See dealer

If you're certain the DEF is good, this is usually the beginning of the SCR issue in the 2014's. Have them check to see if your VIN is on the list for the SCR RRT. It involves the DEF system as well.

If they're still giving you the run around, get on the phone with Chrysler and explain the problem you're having with the vehicle and the dealer. Get them to open a case in their corporate system. Tell them you're taking it to a different dealer for this warranty issue and that you'll refuse any billing from the incompetent dealer.

I have a 2014 with 38,299 miles which has had nothing but Peak Blue DEF in it. I purchase two boxes at a time from Autozone, I have never had an issue. I live in Houston where it gets plenty hot. The empty 2.5 gal jugs make a great container for waste oil as do my own oil changes.

I would use a different dealer if you have one where you live. Even though my dealer screwed up the first and only oil change, they have been okay with what little warranty work has been needed, mostly updates on the transmission.

Good luck.

Re: Incorrect DEF - See dealer

I received the same message this week and the vehicle is now with the dealer for troubleshooting. I had it with the dealer a month ago when I received a check engine light. They indicated that it needed a new cat and to replace when I could (they didn't have one in stock). I thought the cat issue may have contributed to the incorrect DEF message. I didn't realize that there was a difference in DEF (BlueDEF vs non-BlueDEF?). Oy - I just wish I could remove all of this DEF/EGR crap.

I purchased DEF at the dealer in June 2015 and had them price match another Jeep dealer that was selling it online with free shipping for $7.69 a gallon. I also wanted (2) 2.5 gallon jugs that were $15.50 a piece and they came in a case of two. The parts manager was busy when I came in and he only charged me for (1) 1 gallon @ $7.69 and (1) 2.5 gallon @ $15.50. I think he saw the one case and thought there was only (1) 2.5 gallon in there. I payed and quickly loaded up and got out of there before he realized what happened.
