I honestly don't know if the diesel hits your wallet harder if you stomp on it a lot--unless your area is quite different, diesel fuel is more expensive than the midgrade of a hemi or even premium of an SRT.

If all else is equal and you can use an SRT for whatever it is you want to use it for, this looks like a no-brainer.

I haven't seen anything from Banks for a jeep other than a 630 engine swap into an old jeep they charge $30k for.

This is what we did as well - consolidate the larger family car / daily driver and a 3rd vehicle I needed to tow with (a gas v8 pickup). I was looking at a midsize SUV as well at the time as I wanted something tough enough yet small enough that it was easy to drive and park (not a land yacht). I ended racing season so turned in the leased pickup and had to tow another time so borrowed a friends pickup with a diesel in it. All I could say was wow. Where my v8 pickups needed to rev like hell to make it up a hill or maintain 65 mph with drag from the trailer - this thing just purred along at < 2k rpm. When I needed to get moving quickly it just did it without any drama. Then it came time to not have to gas up every 200 miles as it got 2x better mpg towing than my gas trucks. So my search became - diesel mid size SUV. So onto BMW / Benz / VW and sticker shock for new / used. I then stumbled upon the red headed stepchild doing a diesel suv search and found a local WK CRD. Test drove it and I was sold. Had it for several years and loved it - then the WK2 CRD came along and I wanted a new one. The WK CRD I bought for $19.6k with 68k miles and sold it 2 years later with 115k miles for $17k (I did put $1.5k into it for stillen brake rotor / pad upgrade and the GDE Ecotune with DPF delete pipe - wow that made a huge difference in power and economy too [and brakes as the WK brakes were terrible]).

Simply put with the EcoDiesel you get the power of a v8 and the fuel economy of a mid size sedan. You can't beat that with any gas equivalent on the market with these parameters. Then when comes time to sell - you will have much better resale than the gas models and if own it long enough you'll actually have saved money over time due to much better mpg.
