Is the Ecodiesel fun to drive?

I may get back into a '14+ Grand Cherokee again in the not too distant future. I am still undecided between SRT, Summit, or Overland. With the Summit or Overland it will either be the Hemi or Ecodiesel. V6 will not be a consideration as I had that in my 2012 Overland and it was pretty lame. I know it was the older transmission which absolutely ruined the driving experienced so I have no doubts the V6 with the new 8speed is worlds better, but either way I just want something more fun as I have always been more of a performance kinda guy.
I know the only true test would be for me to drive the diesel, but being that I have never owned a diesel ever I just wanted to see if you guys think it would be something a performance car enthusiasts would find to be entertaining to drive. Does it have excellent acceleration with all that torque? I have seen some 0-60 tests and it doesn't seem all that impressive, but being a decent size SUV I guess I cant expect anything too great. Basically, if I was to purchase an Overland diesel, I just dont want to find myself getting bored with it after a while like I did my 2012 V6.
Thoughts, opinions?

I love driving mine, but I look at it as a truck not a performance vehicle so I probably can't help you there. There is some decent turbo lag on it, but once you get it spooled up she moves.

Re: Is the Ecodiesel fun to drive?

I think it's great but I treat it as an SUV. It has sufficient power for the highway passing running around town that I do with it.

But the thing about the diesels is that they feel great if you are light on the throttle. However, if you like to get the engine to downshft and haul butt, you would be disappointed with it as they fall very flat once revved up. Not surprising as they have great torque but low hp.

Re: Is the Ecodiesel fun to drive?

Before completely giving up on the diesel, you might want to ping Gale Banks to see if he has any insane level kits for it to turn it into a racer truck.

I honestly don't know if the diesel hits your wallet harder if you stomp on it a lot--unless your area is quite different, diesel fuel is more expensive than the midgrade of a hemi or even premium of an SRT.

If all else is equal and you can use an SRT for whatever it is you want to use it for, this looks like a no-brainer.

Re: Is the Ecodiesel fun to drive?

The EcoDiesel is a performance vehicle but as more an endurance athlete versus the Hemi or SRT8 which are sprinters from a stop, the EcoDiesel will give you 30-50% better mpg and 90% of the performance of the Hemi. I like going up the mountains in 8th gear at 1,800 rpm and have it launch without having to downshift. Towing it's a dream - just make sure to get air suspension as it makes a big difference in handling and towing.

Re: Is the Ecodiesel fun to drive?

We bought our Overland for towing an off-road trailer. It's also my wife's daily driver. It works great for that. In retrospect, with the differential between diesel fuel and gas, and problems with the diesel engine discussed elsewhere on this forum, I'd buy the hemi if I had it to do over.

Re the Touareg vs. the JGC, my buddy has a Touareg and he is envious of my JGC. We haven't run them yet though.

Re: Is the Ecodiesel fun to drive?

For me, the diesel is a ton of fun to drive. It's really the torque that does it. HP you don't really feel, but torque is really what you get in the seat of your pants.

Another great thing is that you are ALWAYS using the power of the diesel because max torque is right around 2000rpm. So that means every time you pull away from a light, the motor is getting into its peak powerband.

With the gas 6 and 8, you have to rev it all the way up to get into the powerband. With the diesel, you lean into the go pedal and the power is already there. Being a big gearhead, I love to drive the car every day. The longer the trip, the better.
