BUT it says "if the tank is OVERFILLED..."

Might be splitting hairs, but it seems having a full tank of DEF is perfectly safe.

Good catch, Zhe Wiz. Always good to RTFM. I live in San Francisco where it's always moderate temps. I am lucky.

I'll be mindful of freezing conditions when I drive up the Al-Can Highway, in 3 or 5 years or so. It's not on the calendar yet. I plan to drive up to Prudhoe Bay, only 3,500 miles from home, one way. I'll "swing by" Inuvik, NWT and then Calgary on the way back home, so a 9,000 dream road trip. But I digress... Didn't mean to hijack the thread.

I just added another 2.5 gallon BlueDEF unit, which brought me back to just under 50% full.

After analyzing several mathematical limits/recurrence relations, I'm reasonably convinced that the average age of the DEF in the tank ends up being the average age of your DEF at purchase + the time interval at which you add DEF.

That is to say, as the number of DEF refills trends to infinity, the average age of DEF in the tank asymptotically approaches the refill interval (presuming you are adding zero day old DEF at each refill, otherwise that age gets added too). Thus, for those "DEF freshness" obsessives out there, it makes more sense to keep the tank more on the empty side (i.e. only refilling the tank partway) rather than filling it to 100% more infrequently.

Again, this isn't likely to be something that people have to practically be concerned about. I just liked to play with the math.

Re: Is there a shelf life on DEF fuid??

I did some research on this. Mopar says a shelf life of 1 year, however Peak says their DEF will last for 2 years.
