Is there a shelf life on DEF fuid??

I currently have 5 diesels,my Jeep is the first that needs DEF Fluid.

I was up town yesterday and stopped by my dealer to have them top off the def tank.

The guy in the parts dept said up till yesterday they did not keep any on their shelf because it has a shelf life. Is this true?

I have yet to buy any DEF my self yet,but most auto parts and walmart are carrying DEF FLuid,NAPA is selling it for $6.49 per gallon or 13.99 for 2.5 gallons.

Re: Is there a shelf life on DEF fuid??

Walmart has it too right by the oil. Yes it has a shelf life. The exact life expectancy was listed in a previous post but in general the higher the temperature the lower the shelf life which is true in general for most water-acid mixes...
It was posted before but this is a good source of information:

I dug up this document on the web. Chart three has a table that shows how the shelf life changes with temperature. Other cool info as well.

Re: Is there a shelf life on DEF fuid??

Folks, in the more northern climates (Ohio/Ontario/Michigan for eg.), would it be OK to completely fill the Def tank or would you still want to leave at a lower level to keep it fresher?

Provided you are doing 10k miles a year?

Thanks

During the coldest months, you should always leave some headspace ie don't have it completely full. A severe coldsnap could freeze the DEF solution resulting in expansion which could rupture your DEF holding tank.

Great to know thank you.

In terms of shelf life in colder climates, is there any concern to top up completely towards summer and then monitor getting into November and not go over 3/4 full for example?

Thanks

Yes that sounds like a good strategy. I'll probably do the same. No need to be overly concerned about this. A full tank should last about 16,000 km. Your mileage may vary. Happy motoring .

Re: Is there a shelf life on DEF fuid??

There is a date code on the vendor's bottle or box - other threads have this decipher - but where I live is a good example of being mindful of urea freshness.
--Living in Phoenix summer temps can get 115 degrees on the dog days.
--Living in the desert dictates me to:
WATCH THE FRESHNESS DATE ON THE LABEL as even the auto parts wherehouses can get very hot.
I never go more in urea tank than what I can use in a month usually a little more than a gallon. So when more is added it wil dilute the residue left in the tank and hopefully not be too strong or I get a DTC code.
Even in winter it's no more then 2 or3 gallons just fewer times checking level. And yes I went through the P20EE growing pain phase and the WK2 diesel now has all the flashes and a new SCR cat.

It is another thing to watch for as you try to enjoy this fantastic motor in a nice SUV.

The tanks have significant room built in for fluid expansion. You can top it off during the winter with no concerns.

Excerpt from 2014 JGC USER GUIDE, pg.147....."If your vehicle is not in operation for an extended period of time with temperatures below 12F (-11C) the DEF in the tank may freeze. If the tank is overfilled and freezes, it could be damaged".....

Re: Is there a shelf life on DEF fuid??

I filled mine last June (9.5 months ago) at a truck stop and haven't had any related degradation shelf life problems. I'm at about 5/16 on the DEF tank gauge now.

If you have a truck stop near you to fill up, or partially fill if you deem prudent, it will be less expensive per gallon than those 2.5 gallon jugs.

Filling at a truck stop in line with big diesel rigs is worth it alone just for the odd looks you will get.

According to this the shelf life is two years if storage temps don't exceed 75 degrees and over 6 months when stored at a constant 95 degree temp.

It also says it expands 7% when frozen.

Re: Is there a shelf life on DEF fuid??

Yeah, I recently purchased some PeakBlue DEF from Home Depot after shopping around locally. Because the date code indicated it was made in Jan 2015 I knew it hadn't been exposed to high/degrading temps. I bought 2 x 2.5 gallon boxes. One went into the Jeep immediately in order to fill the tank up to about 40% full.

The other box/jug went into my basement where it will be stored in nice, climate controlled conditions until I need it later in the year. I plan to add it once the gauge gets down to ~15%. This will avoid the need for me to buy DEF that was possibly warehoused in questionable circumstances.

I'd say that none of what I did is likely to be necessary or even will provide any particular benefit. But, you know, I'm obsessive.
