JGC 2014 Overland with issues

Overall this is a great vehicle and I am enjoying it, the ride, motor and easy to use technology is amazing. Fit and finish has a ways to go to match germans. That being said I have had way too many issues and they are taking way to long to get fixed. We are taking off on a trip for 2 months with a Lance travel trailer and hoping they can get this stuff sorted, starting to get nervous. Luckily most was delivery and cosmetic. I have sold my Audi Q5 and have had a ton of vehicles over the years. I really want/need this one to work. The dealer have had my JGC for a week and when I picked it up almost nothing was done. Much of this is dealer but still...

- 5 weeks from brand new to get into service
- dealer was wrong, Overland doesn't have front park assist, I wanted the Overland for the 18 inch wheels and skid plates and tow bars, I would expect a fairly expensive SUV to have this feature
- smelled like it was on fire at mile 285, 3 of us jumped out of the jeep and it was towed to a closer dealer since Jeep wouldn't tow it an extra 10 miles to where I purchased it, no issue found, seems to of fixed itself! Maybe it was plastic that melted onto engine
- empty DEF fluid, they did fill after a week in service, I even asked at delivery
- Crack in overhead where the home link is, replacing the whole part when they get it
- loose oxygen sensor causing an alarming rattle, I thought the skid plates were loose
- fold down cover for usb storage area has a huge gap on left side (when closed) and is touching on the right
- the surround pulls up when I try to open the storage compartment
-brake booster recall that they did do
- axle replacement waiting on parts also a recall
- rear carpet had a big cut out of it, they had to replace the whole carpet
- alarm randomly comes up, apparently they did a flash to fix this
- rear down gate would not go down of power for 3 days, no faults found
- nick in the passenger side leather trim, they are calling it "natural texture" ok fine
- passenger side seat controls pushed into the seat when a friend adjusted
- sd card just starting playing 2-7 minutes after start up
- rear backup camera is super shaky
- adaptive cruise recall
- scratches on steering wheel trim
- some rattle by the push to start button
- erratic shifting from start and stop
- erratic braking, sometimes it's soft and sometimes hard
- roof rack options or pretty grim for ones that work with factory rack
- strange exterior gaps around gas tank, rear trim and other areas, spaces are just not consistent
- engine runs very hot when towing but has not overheated but I feel like I need to monitor this constantly
- no good place for brake controller due to knee bag airbags. I my mind this vehicle is for towing so it would be nice to have a spot without having to drill or re-wire to center and take up storage of which is pretty limited, ok this isn't a problem just not ideal
- not very easy or smooth to put in low range, at least it has low range
- suspension is constantly adjusting when parked, even the next morning in the garage it's sometime clicking away

Anyway, hoping it can get sorted and isn't a sign of things to come. Fingers and toes crossed. Overall impressed but left with lingering doubts. It was the first car I have ever purchased and extended warranty. Usually I get a new rig every 2 years but this one I am planning on keeping... so far.

Anyway, this forum is super helpful.

Re: JGC 2014 Overland with issues

I have had a number of issues as well, many of which are similar to yours. I can't get too worked up about the ones for which they have software fixes - obviously would be better if the software was right out of the box but that is hardly the case for any software intensive product.

That being said, the major issue I have is with the QC at JNAP and the seeming indifference at HQ to QC issues. I had misaligned trim, poor fitting center console cover (same issue as you), poor fitting rubber window trim, door ding, paint issues, loose bolts under the truck, etc.

I just can't comprehend how in this day and age these kinds of issues make it past the QC folks at the assembly plant. It is really inexcusable.

Re: JGC 2014 Overland with issues

You have had way too many issues for a new Overland. I have the gap for the USB door being addressed as well as the poor fit for the fuel door. Other than that mine has been awesome. Can I live with those issues if not corrected? Sure and I have adjusted to some of the JGC differences that come with adapting to a new vehicle. But I really enjoy driving this thing more so than what I expected.

You stated something about 18' wheels and skid plates. Did you order the ORAII for yours? I didn't because I will add my own skid plates and don't want 18" wheels.

Please post how this goes for you. QC on mine was very good but I know the factory at JNAP is working to produce as many JGCs as they can which may be why some of this slips by...

Re: JGC 2014 Overland with issues

I understand that JNAP is operating at full throttle but if Honda and Toyota can crank out hundreds of thousands of Accords and Camrys that don't have as many paint and fit and finish issues, FCA ought to be able to do the same.

Re: JGC 2014 Overland with issues

I do love the vehicle, I can't complain about the stuff getting fixed either, I guess the bottom line is Jeep dealers and Jeep needs to step up. They want to compete with luxury brands and need to treat this as such. With Audi, Porsche, and even Volvo's I have had the dealers do their best to take care of things asap. When I dropped a vehicle off everything was already at the dealer, an appointment took a few days and the parts were there. 5 weeks for an appointment at means they have too many issues and/or are under staffed, to not have parts after 5 weeks and not do the stuff is just a bad deal, especially when I live 1.25 hours away. I know more about the product than the salespeople at multiple dealers. Bottom line needs to step up with dealers, warranty and fit and finish or I guess lots of folks such as myself with switch back to luxury brands for luxury treatment.

Re: JGC 2014 Overland with issues

Reports like this are very troubling, and I hope both Jeep HQ and the dealer network are listening. Some of these issues are factory QC and some should have been caught and fixed by the dealer before delivery. For my part, the dealer delivered my GC Limited diesel in mint condition with full DEF, and I have 12000 miles on it with none of the issues reported in this forum. But this is a newly engineered vehicle, so I suspect some of the reported problems will appear, and this forum will be very useful when this happens.

Yes, I did get the package with the 18's and skid plates, it's a pretty good package. It's actually better than the coverage on my wifes, 2014 Willy's. Plus the tires with the 18 are good, arguably better than the larger size ones. In retrospect I may of gone with the Summit and added skid plates and changes the tires and wheels.

Re: JGC 2014 Overland with issues

Don't understand how all that got past quality control. Ours was built Feb 14 and is/has been absolutely faultless, except for the DEF skidplate issue, body panel fit is excellent, interior trim perfect except for a small slit on a door rubber which will be replaced. I was all ready to replace the factory 18 inch Michelins but they came thru winter very well, ice, deep snow, steep driveway and all. Will drive them until they wear out now. I do hope you get yours sorted, as that would really piss me off!

Re: JGC 2014 Overland with issues

Mine has been working great but for a puddle breaking the DEF nozzle and low DEF at delivery. Fit and finish is good overall.

A note on the burning smell (if it smells like paper) mine did that for a couple weeks most noteably when the headlights were on before we stopped. My wife said she saw smoke coming out under the hood and seen by the headlights. It does not do it anymore.

Ok, then next time spend 15-20K more for the VW/ Porsche / Audi Diesel....

EDIT:
Apples to Oranges.

For 50K I got a vehicle that has every bell and whistle and luxury you can think of (including front park assist). There is not a better deal out there. But I will add this. My Past 5 vehicles have been a Ford or Chrysler product, so when I purchased this truck, I knew what I was getting into when it comes to Service and such. That's why I research dealers and pick the best one for my services.

Yes, my wife gets treated like Royalty at the M-B Dealership... she bought a Benz.

EDIT2:

Want to add, I'm sorry for the issues you have been saddled with, and looking over the list, allot of this should have been caught during dealer prep... a scratch steering wheel? Really? I wouldn't have taken delivery.

Below are my thoughts in Bold in case anyone cares.

- dealer was wrong, Overland doesn't have front park assist, I wanted the Overland for the 18 inch wheels and skid plates and tow bars, I would expect a fairly expensive SUV to have this feature

only Available on the Summit... DO NOT depend on the idiot salesguy to answer questions correctly about a vehicle, they know less than you...

And, it's not a flaw, but I agree, it SHOULD be an option for the Limited/Overland

That is weird... Dealer have a clue?

- empty DEF fluid, they did fill after a week in service, I even asked at delivery
- Crack in overhead where the home link is, replacing the whole part when they get it
- loose oxygen sensor causing an alarming rattle, I thought the skid plates were loose
- fold down cover for usb storage area has a huge gap on left side (when closed) and is touching on the right
- the surround pulls up when I try to open the storage compartment
- rear carpet had a big cut out of it, they had to replace the whole carpet
- scratches on steering wheel trim
- some rattle by the push to start button
- erratic shifting from start and stop
- erratic braking, sometimes it's soft and sometimes hard
- nick in the passenger side leather trim, they are calling it "natural texture" ok fine
- strange exterior gaps around gas tank, rear trim and other areas, spaces are just not consistent

Did you test drive the vehicle you bought???? All these Items should have been addressed by the dealer at delivery... again, I would not have signed papers if one of these issues was present.

- brake booster recall that they did do
- axle replacement waiting on parts also a recall
- adaptive cruise recall

Buy a GM product Everyone has recalls... even Porsche

- rear down gate would not go down of power for 3 days, no faults found
- passenger side seat controls pushed into the seat when a friend adjusted

Certainly items that would be tough to find during the dealer prep/delivery process, hope they fix.

- sd card just starting playing 2-7 minutes after start up
- rear backup camera is super shaky

Fixed with the lastest firmware for the uconnect. It's a computer, it's going to need fixes and patches.

- roof rack options or pretty grim for ones that work with factory rack

- engine runs very hot when towing but has not overheated but I feel like I need to monitor this constantly

There's a discussion about this on these forums. Not a big deal, IMHO. Also read the Diesel Supplement.

- suspension is constantly adjusting when parked, even the next morning in the garage it's sometime clicking away

By design. it wants to keep the vehicle level. not a flaw

My 2 cents are all out.... Good Luck with getting it sorted. I'd think about finding a better dealer for service, just my opinion.
