Why not 33%? The diesel design is thermodynamically 30% more efficient than a gasoline engine. And gas motors can't run as lean as they should due to emissions tuning needed to fire the cats. To be fair, I get a little less than 39 at 60 in your same scenario...not by much though.

Remember that diesel has more BTUs per gallon also so higher efficiency and more energy per gallon too. Our motor is also smaller. ☺
