K&N Cold Air Intake (CAI) 63-1570

Does anyone have this CAI installed?

Seems like everyone here favors the AFE CAI. There isn't much info our there on the internet on the K&N 63-1570. From the looks of the picture, it comes with an additional pipe that replaces the silencer pipe that's in front of the engine cover (if standing in front of the grill of front facia).

Yeah, that thing looks pretty slick - and the silencer delete probably accounts for a good chunk of torque at the higher RPMs. I've heard that aftermarket hoses tend to blow off, though, so make sure you crank the connecting straps down.

I just bought one on autoanything.com. With coupon COUP15EXTRA it's $319 shipped instead of $375.

I also have the GDE tune, so I'm wondering if those TQ and HP nrs are going to be as significant as K&N claims for a stock ECU.

PLEASE DO A DYNO! I'm sure we'd all appreciate the data.

I'm trying to find anywhere that just sells the silencer replacement pipe...

Re: K&N Cold Air Intake (CAI) 63-1570

So I just talked to GDE about an unrelated topic, but I figured I'd ask for their opinion about using a CAI and their reply was:

"Intakes and exhaust are a waste of money on this application and avoid a K&N style air filter at all costs. It may have a bit less pressure drop, but allows larger dirt particles through and is not good for a turbo charged engine"

So I cancelled my order for the CAI. Sorry to be a debbie downer!

I would assume it's likely the poor design of the filtration media of the K&N cone filter that is causing the issue. I would like to think if you put a cone filter sock on, it'll provide an extra layer of filtration, which should help with this problem. Or.....one can change out the K&N Cone filter and put in a paper cone filter. It will then essentially be OEM filtration but in cone shaped. Does anyone know a company that makes a good paper cone filter?

I know the GDE guys are former big 3 engineers and smart guys but K&N filters are sufficient at filtering contaminants and would not be in business this long if they passed enough to hurt an engine long term. I had a Honda and Expedition that I put 150k & 175k that had a K&N from almost the 1st day that never had any engine trouble. As an engineer myself I have to be conscious not to pay too much attention to very small details which in the long term are more or less irrelevant. That said, there are no such things as a free lunch, TANSTAAFL.

Is that your vehicle with the K&N Intake? If so, how are you liking it?

Yes! I couldn't agree more!!!!

The fine dirt particulate that a K&N oiled cotton gauze air filter allows to pass is not good for any engine! Don't buy into K&N's marketing BS!

A paper or synthetic media cone filter would be a much better choice for CAI air filtration.
