Hi all,
I have a 2016 HA EcoDiesel and am very happy with it so far but two things annoy me.
The lag and shifting points off the line. The diesels have lots of torque but it doesn't seem to help me off the line when I want to get in front of another car when my lane is ending.
There is some lag from when I hit the pedal, I assume its turbo lag and then there is the shifting points. Doesn't matter if I'm in sport mode with Eco off or in normal driving mode. Under hard acceleration Its shifting around 3800 RPMs. I'd like to see this go higher and approaching the redline, especially when I'm in sport mode with Eco off.
I believe theses two issues is what is hurting me off the line.
Is there anything I can do to address these issues?
I haven't noticed any problems with the shift points other than when I almost come to a stop and then decide to go again, the shift from 2 back down to 1 to get me going can be a bit lurching. Eco-mode usually helps smooth that out.
If I want a good launch, I usually put it in sport, hold the brake with left foot and run it up to about 1000RPM with right a few moments before the green light. If you don't like the shift points after that, then just use the paddle shifters. This thing isn't meant for drag racing, but I find it does pretty well for what it is.
I've also tried putting it manual mode while sport is on and using the paddles to shift myself, but it will automatically shift at around 3800 RPMs so the paddles are basically useless to try to hold it past that.
I may be wrong but I dont think you want the diesel to rev higher, it is not a NA gas engine so the horsepower and torque are falling at 3800rpm and not maintaining or increasing. It is better for it to shift at 3800 and lower the rpm back into the peak power range.
I'm happy with the way it drives and shifts under normal use. The gas milage is pretty good too. I can get 1,000 kms to a tank of gas under normal use which I could never get with my 2012 6-Cylinder Overland.
I get wish while in sport mode and foot to the floor at the green light it would get up and go just a bit better. I know it isn't a Hemi or SRT and I don't want it to be. Just a little more get up and go off the line.
You might want to see if the dealer will reset you adaptations of the transmission.
Mine is spot on and there is more than turbo lag this is a drive by wire system so the DME controls the acceleration. You can put a device on which makes the electronic lad minimal. There is an active thread on this right now.
This is not a drag racing vehicle and mine with 420 ft pounds of torque is plenty fast...
Mr. Plow's launch technique works well and is a good way to avoid the turbo lag. Off the line this way the JGC CRD is pretty good. And I keep it in Eco mode, and it's fine. That won't help for rolling launches though.
The turbo lag does take some getting used to!
The CRD makes its power down low. You don't want to rev it. Low RPMs is one reason why Diesel engines last longer.
GDE tune, and a pedalbox. problem gone. trans, tho, is another story. the thing does not downshift fast enough for yield signs, and rotary's... can be dangerous.
Down here in Australia, the S49 update (had the trans lockout fix to stop roll away) smoothed out the non linear throttle/sharpened throttle response and improved shift quality.
this is a very heavy vehicle, but its not exactly slow. That being said, you really shouldn't be *depending* on WOT in 1st gear very often to move around in normal traffic. GTIs and sport bikes can zip and weave, we cannot.
1st is pretty short though. To me it pulls a lot smoother if I shift well before 3600. Even after all the software updates 1-2 has never been very crisp for me. (1-2 auto is lurchy, 1-2 manual is fine)
