Leaking transmission thoughts..

I took a 300 mile trip and found clear fluid leaking from under the engine skid plate. Took it into the Jeep dealership out by the vacation cabin and they could not find the leak. Said everything was OK. It got documented in the service write up. By the way, the 8-speed fluid is clear/slight yellow tint, not red like normal transmission fluid.

Drove back home another 300 miles and at the end of the trip I noticed the transmission was jerking/stuttering and slipping. One time it popped into neutral by itself, another couple times got stuck in a single gear.

Took it back to my local Jeep dealership and they found a transmission oil line leaking. Ordered the lines to replace. They said they tested the transmission pump and also found no metal shavings or anything in the trans oil.

Do you think permanent damage could have occurred or worn out my transmission prematurely? Surely low oil in there isn't a good thing... I did baby it when it started to act up and kept an eye on the transmission oil temp, it never got hotter than normal. The dealer said there was enough oil left that it didn't damage anything, but who really knows...

Thoughts? Could the transmission still be fine or would you guys press for something else other than just replace the lines and top up the oil?

I'd call Jeep customer care and explain the situation to them and ask for a free service contract. They'll see that one of their dealers dropped the ball and should do something to make it right.

The first '14 GC I bought wore through the trans cooler line at 369 miles, before I even got home on delivery day. Line was touching the front driveline from the factory. It did basically what you describe; random gear changes, slipping and lack of forward power. It eventually locked itself in park on the side of the highway after it pumped all its oil on the ground. After it was all repaired, it made a little groan noise on certain downshifts. Keep your ears out and listen and feel for anything unusual, no matter how slight from now on.

Long story short, I came to a trade in agreement with Jeep and ordered a new replacement GC for very little out of pocket. Before I went that route, they seemed very eager to give me a free service contract.

Re: Leaking transmission thoughts..

I doubt you have an issue. You have it documented and that should provide great support if the transmission fails.
I would also keep an eye on the transmission pan as the new pans have a tendency to crack causing a leak you can't detect...

Re: Leaking transmission thoughts..

Update:

They used four quarts of oil to top off the transmission after replacing the trans oil cooler line. Anyone know how many quarts the transmission uses?

The bad part is the car under medium to heavy acceleration bucks and stutters. My issue is that right at the same time the trans cooler line was leaking, they flashed the PCM. So I don't know if it's either or both. The bucking is so significant the whole car longitudinally heaves up and down.

Under light acceleration it is ok.

That's definitely not right. Take it back and have them figure it out. My money is on the transmission being shot from running dry.
