Low DEF warning vs DEF Level Gauge

I just got my first DEF warning message, indicating I have 500 miles before I run out. Strangely though, when I bought the Jeep the gauge showed about 1/3 of a tank, and today w/ the warning on it's still showing 1/4.

If a full tank of DEF is supposed to last about the length of an oil change, shouldn't that be around 10k miles? I'm at 4k miles so would make sense to be almost out if they only give you 1/3 a tank from the dealer, BUT that should also mean 1/4 showing on the gauge = about 2500 miles left, and that 500 miles to empty should show the gauge at nearly empty.

Seems as though the gauge isn't very accurate?

My 500 miles came on a few weeks ago and I was also at 1/4 on the gauge. Went to the fill station a few days later about 350 miles to engine won't restart and put in 6.5 gallons of DEF. Now the gauge shows slightly below full. About 1/8 down off full. Who knows!

The DEF tank ultrasonic fill level sensor is highly inaccurate, so these stories make sense.

This is why the manufacturer stipulates you must add at *least* 1 gallon of DEF when refilling. If less than that amount is added then the algorithm will assume that the sensor is going crazy again and will ignore the new fill level.

Don't worry about the gauge accuracy as long as you have a DEF injector protection plate. You'll always have plenty of warning unless the wimpy plastic DEF injector (that a child could wiggle around with a single finger) gets sheared off by driving over a puddle on the road and then leaks out all of your DEF like a severed artery.
