Re: Max MPG? Hypermiling the Diesel JGC

the best I've seen is 33.1 mpg with cruise control locked at 60. I would say drive leisurely in 70-75 MPH range I can see 30 mpg over a trip. So far I've put on 3200 miles and all time mpg is ~26. Will this motor last? Although I didn't buy MaxCare warranty I thought it was interesting the longest plan is 8 years.

Your motor wont be broke in well for several thousand more miles. It'll hit its stride at 10k-15k and you should see 34-35 mpg on a flat cruise with good fuel.

The motor, if its like any other diesel I've owned, will outlive the chassis in most cases. The jury os out on common rail injection since it has only been out for a decade or so....

Re: Max MPG? Hypermiling the Diesel JGC

On our recent ~650 mile trip from Richmond VA to lower Michigan and back, we got right at 31mpg on the way up and about 30.5mpg on the way back. Each way we probably stopped 5-6 times (travelling with a 20 month old...) and for 95% of the time while on the highway we would have been between 65 and 75 mph. When we were in MI we took a short trip where we had a light tail wind and a semi to follow at 65-68 MPH and we saw a steady 35.5 - 36 mpg in that scenario. Very pleased. Until I got a recent CEL for Incompatible DEF. Hopefully this isn't the end of a good relationship with this vehicle, we have really been pleased up to now.

Re: Max MPG? Hypermiling the Diesel JGC

I just averaged 28 and change with hilly freeway driving at about 72-73 on cruise control with sporadic city driving. I was on track to get just over 700 miles to the tank but I always fill up around 1/4 tank to make sure it is only 1 credit card swipe.

Wayne Gerdes went from Chicago to Austin on one tank.. he did it at 44USmpg

Overall quite remarkable fuel economy for a vehicle weighing 2440kg/5380lbs (weighbridge weight of my JGC) + ~ 260kg load, Total GVM ~ 2700kg/6000lb

Some of these claims are ridiculous. Chicago to Austin is over 1,100 miles. So unless he drove 50 MPH, with a 30 knot tailwind, with 180 PSI in his tires, that didn't happen. I average 20-25 MPG in my Diesel.

Anyone getting over 35 MPG (and barely over as I don't trust any 40+ MPG claims) on the highway IMO is driving super slow, like 50-55 tops. That feels like I am sitting still and is unbearable.

Wayne Gerdes is famous in Prius circles for getting ridiculous mileage too. I'm sure he did drive slowly, and used every possible trick in his book to get that mileage. He's a well known "hypermiler". A normal person driving normally would never get those numbers it's true. He's not even trying to say that. Just showing the upper end of what's possible if you don't mind pissing off every other driver on the road, even Prius drivers. :-)

I'm quite certain he didn't have the cruise set. He would have coasted down hills and bled off speed going up. That's what hypermilers do. I doubt he averaged 50 MPH for the trip, probably much slower than that, but I haven't read the article.

Anyway, I'm sure it's true, but it's not practical to drive that way. That guy knows his stuff when it comes to squeezing every mile possible from a gallon of fuel.

Re: Max MPG? Hypermiling the Diesel JGC

Hah, could you imagine driving 45-50 MPH all the way from Chicago to Austin? I think I'd go bat crazy. Even using every trick in the book, I'd still only believe it if I saw it. Just to put that into perspective, a VW Jetta diesel that weighs over 2,000 pounds less and way lower coefficient of drag doesn't even get 45MPG during normal highway driving....

Could you imagine everyone on the road "hyper-milling". Suddenly it would take you twice as long to get wherever you were going.

It does if Wayne Gerdes is driving it!! Check the link in my post, you'll see. Read a little about him, google him.

But no, I can't drive that way either. The dude's a special kind of crazy.

Re: Max MPG? Hypermiling the Diesel JGC

Driving style matters. If a driver is getting 24 mpg with the GC Diesel, their mileage in a gasser would suck even more. Some don't understand that others can nurse way more mileage from the same vehicle by modifying their driving behavior, but it's still possible...I do it everyday and don't piss off others.

Yes, but you're not getting 44 MPG over 1100 miles in your CRD either.
