Believe me, driving 40 MPH in 8th gear on the Interstate is pissing off A LOT of people. If there is any amount of traffic every single car on the road in your direction having to go around that guy is a large bottleneck.

Actually, I think I may have the record for the opposite end of this thread for a non-towed item diesel. With all the off-road modifications, extra weight/drag etc and I drive 85+ MPH on the interstate, I must be the least efficient guy out there lol.

But you are right, instead of getting 21MPG with the diesel on the highway, I'd be getting like ~11 in the Hemi.

We put the first 230 miles on our new rig, mostly 55, 65 and 75mph driving, with a majority of 65 mph driving. Filled up and calculated 26.2mpg- very nice!

I've made a few long trips where I get 30+MPG, but my daily driving is averaging around 16-18MPG which keeps my average down.

Well, the Trip computer said 26.2 but doing it the old fashioned way produced 29.9!!



I filled both times, didn't top off on the first did on the 2nd (so should have been lower not higher lol). It's basically all highway but still nice to see on the first tank!!

Non-hypermilling numbers:

After 3000 miles and traveling normally - not babying on-ramps and generally fast(er) highway speeds:

Overall city/country 24.5 (16.5)
Best freeway 29.0 (18.5)
Mountain driving 24.0 (18.0)
Overall city/country w/RocketBox 22.5 (16.0)
Towing an Airstream Bambi (4900#) 18.0 (9.0)

Numbers in parentheses are what I saw with my 2000 WJ/4.7L.

I'm pretty happy with this; particularly the towing number.

With a more conservative driving style, I can easily see much better milage numbers than these...

Wayne Gredes averaged 57.5mph for 800miles of the Chicago - Austin trip
Averaged 48.4mph for the remainder

Now he is getting around at 38.1 USmpg in the RAM 1500 Ecodiesel (same VM Motori 3.0 diesel)

Hypermiling a Ram 1500 EcoDiesel to 38.1 mpg


He seems to like this motor/transmission combination for the unlikely levels of fuel ecomony that it can obtain in a large vehicle size.

I really think the Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel is one of the greatest personal cars available, stock, to the general public in the world.

There a few others in its league but are much more expensive. The GC Diesel is an amazing value for its capabilities, no doubt.

Flat terrain, low altitude, good fuel, 39 psi tires, and cruise at 65 mph yields 34.5 mpg on the EVIC with my Limited ORA2. Any speed change or large hills causes the average to drop. Its really not practical to think I'm able achieve that all the time. I use that as a baseline test on the same stretch of flat highway to make sure everything is healthy and nothing has changed. Flat highway by my definition is terrain that gradually rises and drops less than 50 feet over a 1/2 mile or so with no overall gain in altitude and the cruise doesn't have to react drastically to maintain speed.

The same run at 55 pushes the EVIC mpg to 37 and 50 mph is 39. I can't get to 40 mpg no matter the speed under those same conditions. Perhaps airing up to 42 psi or more would reduce friction enough...but at 39 psi the ride is already a little rough. Not using the cruise might help too.

EVIC mpg is contriversial and not as reliable as hand calculations but I don't have 750 miles of flat highway and 14 hours to test it! The EVIC is just a relative measurement for improvement.

I did drive to Cleveland OH (660 miles) nonstop at 70 mph average when unobstructed and my hand calculated mileage was 29.5 or so. I reported it here earlier. It included an hour of slow moving traffic jam time. The return trip had 2 major construction detours and a stop which put me 2 hours behind so I ran 80 mph+ for the remaining 250 miles and mpg slipped to 27.5 for that tank.
