Re: Maximum tongue weight

Wireman,

Haven't taken it to the CAT scales yet but aim on doing that before our next trip. However I did calculations based on the factory build weight sticker on our trailer plus 2 batteries, 2 propane tanks, 15 gallons of water on board and our "stuff".

My estimation is 4500/4600lbs and I then used the tongue weight figures of 15% of the gross (675/690lbs). I belong to the Lance Owners Group and a fellow Lance 1685 owner has a similar set-up and we are within a few pounds of each other .

My JGC diesel tows it with ease.......

Re: Maximum tongue weight

philbytx, I figured towing would not be an issue. I'll be at another #1000 or so and loaded properly and the WDH setup correctly I can expect no issues towing that weight.

This JGC is as comfortable and drives as good as anything I've ever owned. Even with a 4x4 and a diesel its quiet and rides like a caddy.

I'm buying the lightest trailer that fits our needs, floor plan, features, and weight.

I don't want to come near the max. towing cap. of #7200. Wireman

Re: Maximum tongue weight

If you are looking for a lightweight trailer, with good construction, storage and space utilization check out Lance. For months, we looked around for a well constructed lighter weight trailer and, after a lot of research, went with the Lance 1685.

For good feedback on ownership, here's the Owner community :
Forums | Lance Owners of America
Here's the manufacturer:
Lance Camper | Truck Campers, Travel Trailers and Toy Haulers

Not affilliated, just a happy owner of both our JGC diesel and our Lance 1685.

Re: Maximum tongue weight

philbytx, I have looked at the Lance line of TT. They are great quality and have great features. The one we were considering was the 2285. Had both a couch and a dinette and a bedroom that can be closed off like the wife wanted.

My only concern was that there is only 1 roof A/C unit and it was not ducted. If the bdrm was closed how would it be cooled sufficiently. The factory rep said that they don't want to decrease the roof integrity and insulation factor with ducted air.

So the wife & I settled on the Jayco 23RLSW. Not perfect but meets most of our needs particularly floor plan & most of the features we wanted. Wireman

Re: Maximum tongue weight

FYI, I finally got a chance to weigh each JGC axle. This is with full fuel and 2 people as we will tow. We don't plan on carrying more than another 25# of stuff inside (cooler, etc.).

Total weight -- 5940# (6800# Rated)

Front axle ---- 3100# (3200# Rated)

Rear axle ---- 2840# (3700# Rated)

So adding 100# for a weight distribution hitch and around 550# of tongue weight I am well within the RAWR which was a concern. Even at Jeep's max tongue weigh rating of 720# I would barely make it.

My JGC Limited 4WD diesel has most of the options including skid plates. Hope this gives someone a baseline if you plan on towing. Wireman

Re: Maximum tongue weight

wireman,

Have you looked at the Andersen WDH? It is lighter than most "bar" systems and would help reduce your tongue weight. e.g. The Andersen (including hitch ball) weighs 51lbs and a Reese Round Bar w/o ball weighs in at 69lbs.

Re: Maximum tongue weight

I haven't yet purchased a WDH. I will check out there website for info. Right now I'm leaning toward a Husky Centerline TS.

I just ordered my travel trailer a couple of days ago and it won't be delivered for about 8-10 weeks so I have plenty of time to decide. Wireman

We use an Equalizer hitch and I think it is way too much for our camper. It is rated for 1k/10k, and our camper is about 500/4,800 when loaded. The hitch and bars are HEAVY! If I were planning to stay with this GC and trailer, I would look at switching to a lighter hitch.

Re: Maximum tongue weight

I'm looking at one rated at 6-800# tongue weight. Might be a little to much but better than to little. It should cover the range I need. Wireman

Re: Maximum tongue weight

I have the Andersen on our JGC Diesel towing a Lance 1685 weighing about 4600/4800lbs with "stuff" in it. I installed the Andersen and set it up myself and found it very easy to install. With about 10k towing with it, I can say it makes the TV/TT unit feel like "one".

Here's an installation video plus you can find other reviews and explanatory vids on youtube:

Re: Maximum tongue weight

Talltale: I am new to the forum, have spent the last 5 days crawling through the links. I have a 2015 GC with eco-diesel / Summit Pkg. / Trailer Pkg. / Air Suspension. Towing a Passport Ultra-lite 27', about 5400#'s Loaded. I Have done a lot of research on the ProPride Hitch. Planning to make the investment of $2,400.00 (Not an Issue). I want to know if the claims that it "Virtually" eliminates trailer sway are accurate based on your experience in using the hitch. I'm an Old guy (66) live in Alberta Canada. I have found the form to be very informative. I will be buying the GDE Tuned ECU when I return home from my Snowbird vacation in Phoenix in a couple of weeks. Want to ensure White Knuckle Free towing with the GC or do I need to go to my Ram 1500? Your comments are appreciated.
