MIL/CEL - Predictions?

Some background - last weekend we went up to the local Southern California mountains, just like always. Monday, as I was leaving the park with my baby, the center display showed the message "regeneration in process, continue driving." As my child was in the back, and was ready to eat and/or nap, I drove as much as I could before a meltdown. But the mountain roads are windy and slow, and there was no way I'd get 15 minutes of driving let alone highway/freeway speeds. I took her home, and turned the car off. Drove down the mountains that afternoon. Lots of highway/freeway speeds - 65+ most of the way home. A little driving yesterday. Que today. Driving to a New Year's Eve party with the family, and the MIL/CEL illuminates. DING. Hmmm. No warnings, no "will not start in X miles", no "continue driving" nothing.

I have 6,999 miles since purchase in April. I have not had the car serviced. I have not had to add DEF.

I do not have a code reader. Tomorrow being New Year's Day, the dealer is closed, and I doubt I'd get in to an Autozone or whatever. So, the dealer will be seeing me on Friday AM.

Thoughts? Infamous CAT issue? Clogged DPF? Other type of problem/something else? I'm not worried, to be honest, although when I return to work on Monday, this being wifey's Jeep I hope it's simple and quickly fixed.

Re: MIL/CEL - Predictions?

Same thing just happened to me. MIL amber icon appeared. No other message. I did smell an odor of something burning. Car seems to be running OK. Back to a Jeep dealer...again. Sigh...

From Saturday Night Live about 1976
"Roseanne Roseannadanna: What's your problem?
Jane Curtin: You're straying from the subject, and you're making everybody nauseous!
Roseanne Roseannadanna: Well, Jane, it just goes to show you, it's always something! If it's not one thing, it's another!"

And that nicely describes owning a Jeep.

Same. Car seems to be running well. No issues.

When I arrived home last night, she must have been in regen, although I had no indication on the display, because I got those distinct metal pops underneath and had the slight burn smell.

Maybe the amber light of nonsense will be gone. Wishful thinking.

Re: MIL/CEL - Predictions?

With thousands of parts and hundreds of DTC's guessing what is wrong is just a waste of time. Most DTC's will not display anything on EVIC and just light up CEL. If you are curious, get yourself an OBD II Bluetooth scanner. They are cheap on Amazon and work very well.

Yeah. I get that. It's just a matter of speculation and discussion based on boredness and lack of information until the dealer opens tomorrow morning, given that today is New Years, there's no shops open, and I don't have a code reader.

Speculating is what most of us do around here anyway. Internetz serious business.

Re: MIL/CEL - Predictions?

I have 8,000 miles on mine now. When going to the corner store the other morning it said "to continue driving regen in progress", so I skipped the store went straight to the freeway and drove. I was so relieved when it finally said "regen complete", That was the first time I have had any message, just seems they really should have had it read when its in a cycle so you can just finish it, rather then find out the next time you need to drive somewhere. It will be very inconvenient if it happens on my way to work, or many other inopportune times. This DEF systems really worries me I will be stranded when camping or who knows. Frustrating because I really like this vehicle but I just don't trust it.

Hope they get yours squared away quickly.

Re: MIL/CEL - Predictions?

Well, here's my update...P20EE scr nox catalyst efficiency below threshold bank 1.

Unsurprising, unfortunately, given the issues that nearly everyone else has had around here.

It'll happen to everyone at some point, I have no doubt.

Here's the kicker - I told the dealer SA about all this. Told him to skip all the flash crap and skip to the CAT. He said "oh no, this flash is brand new. It's going to fix it all." After they flashed it and gave the car back, sans CEL, he said "see...!" I told him I'd be back days or weeks with my CEL intact, and that he should be ready to replace the CAT.

Looks like my fun has just started.

For what it's worth, I also got the HVAC update, and it worked wonders. They also updated the power steering program (an apparent recall), did the zip-tie mod for the DEF lines, and did an ECM/Trans update (even though I said I didn't want it, as I'd had no problems). SA was spewing FUD about it being "required to register your vehicle..." HAHAHA. Uh, hell no.

I'll update this thread as time goes on with a recurring CEL and eventual replacement CAT.

Re: MIL/CEL - Predictions?

Here's the revision I was given for the P20EE: http://www.wk2jeeps.com/tsb/tsb_wk2_1801814e.pdf

Knowing what ExcusionDiesel's been through, I'm going to agree with him that while this may fix the algorithms associated with the problems, the CAT is likely toast and will still have to replaced.

If you had rev-D already, rev-E will not fix any P20EE's. Inter-revision changes are marked with "**" and those are the only ones changed from D to E. In this case the E one only adds AC duty cycle changes and enhanced EGR cleaning routine.

Re: MIL/CEL - Predictions?

I feel like a lot of these display a regen message around 8k miles. Mine did. No CEL though, although I did complete the regen before I shut it off. 20k on mine now and never had a regen message except right around 8k miles.

Re: MIL/CEL - Predictions?

I was thinking that same thing when I saw my regen message. From reading on here I was expecting something around 8,000 miles, plus I was just at the dealer for Flash updates, DEF zip ties ect.....I figured something would get messed up after that LOL.

I've not had any revisions or flashes since my vehicle was purchased in April. Believe it was an early 2014 build (Jan-Feb). So my car hasn't been flashed with ANY of the updates until yesterday. So presumably, any software update included everything I'd previously not had with regard to P20EE.
