My 48 hour, 400 mile review...and some second guessing??

I'm a noob EcoDiesel owner (2 days)...bought a used Overland 4x4 w 17Kmiles I got the dealer to show me ALL the service records, which showed the SCR replacement, the transmission TCM update, the recalls and software updates. I decided that the problems this JGC had were "typical", and rationalized that because they'd already happened, that I'd be less likely to have to deal with them. My line of thinking is either pure idiocy, or fairly reasonable...I'm sincerely hoping for the latter.

I opted for EcoD due to the ~52K miles/year I drive and am so happy to report my 32.5mpg average on just a 200 mile freeway run at 70mph. (yes, I know...hand calc vs EVIC) I was hoping for 30mpg so even if the EVIC is optimistic...I'm still happy.

LOVE the Diesel growl....hate the lag...I hear there are solutions.

LOVE the Overland w Adv Tech Pkg...ACC is AWESOME for me

LOVE the ventilated seats...No more swamp ass for me on those regular 5-6 hour drives!

My story is I had a GMC Sierra (LOVED THIS TRUCK) that I used for my extracurriculars...hunting, fishing, towing my trackbikes, etc. I had a BMW 535XI for my work (90% of the miles). Owning two vehicles, and letting one sit and rot away was killing me, so I've been waiting for a capable truck or SUV that could get similar mileage as my car. Finally FCA solved the problem. I was originally set on a RAM 1500 Laramie w EcoD..I've always been a truck guy...and researched the hell out of them, and did look at the JGC, but really...I was a truck guy. And then I rented a Ram for a couple days and realized that I didn't want to drive a truck EVERY day...Yes, it rides beautifully, but it's still a truck. (I'm feeling old writing this). That rental convinced me to go have a deeper look at the JGC...It took two test drives to confirm...and with the mileage, off-road and towing abilities this vehicle suits me perfectly. Hopefully time and miles will bear that out.

BTW - I had a 6spd ZF tranny in the BMW...HUGE fan. That car had 225K miles and only one fluid change. I will be MUCH more diligent with this one.

Anyway, I just felt like telling a story to likeminded EcoD folks. I'm a major DIY'er and am already pondering the next oil change, Tranny, diff's, etc for maintenance...Already see some good info on this forum...so thanks for that!

Here endeth the blathering....

Welcome AndyMax,

We have 30,300 on ours and had the SCR replacement done and all the reflashes EXCEPT for the gear change recall. No problems with ours and I'm waiting to see if there are any issues with the recall before I do it and also if they have a RRT for the change in oil viscosity (as per the 2016's). We love our Overland and mainly use it for long road trips and also towing our Lance Trailer. Get 30+ easily on the highway and around 15/16 towing.

You will find that your right foot will "retune" itself for the turbo lag lol !!

Like you, I do my own oil changes but I installed a Qwikvalve to make it that much easier to do. Just did an oil/filter change before a long road trip and I'll be doing diff changes when we return.

Many happy (s)miles in your new JGC mate

Welcome Andymax. I have a 2014 Limited with Ecodiesel and GDE Hot Tune. If you even like the Ecodiesel now, you would love it with the GDE Hot Tune. The passing is night and day. Turbo lag no longer noticeable. A little more growl to the engine. Engine oil stays clean for like 5,000 miles before turning black. DEF fill-ups and Regen's are few and far in between The best upgrade/accessory you could buy for your JGC! I don't work or get paid in anyway from Green Diesel. But I will not drive my Grand Cherokee again with just the stock tune flash. Don't restrict or hold back the beast of a 3.0L under your hood. I thought about it many nights before pulling the trigger on the Hot Tune. Waste of some good sleep. Have fun!

Re: My 48 hour, 400 mile review...and some second guessing??

Have a friend that has the most expensive Ram 1500 I know with the Hemi. I traded with her for a few days and all I can say is the Ram is nice but handles like most truck which is bus like.
Felt like my SuperDuty but very nicely decked out with all the same features the Jeep has. It also had the boxes on the side of the bed which I thought were hokey but after seeing how useful they were have changed my mind.

This Jeep rides better than my 335 BMW and handles really well. I am close to replacing tires and the Fortera's have treated me well. It will be Michelin or the Forters's again. I have 43000 miles on my tires and they are about 3/32 from the wear bars so if I run them to 2/32 which I will not they would go another 5K miles close to 50000 miles.

I am able to afford most any car or truck I wish but this Jeep is all I need and should need. Once I get maybe 150000 miles will consider selling it.

OP if possible you might visit Ziegler site and see if you can get the extended service contract for 10 years/ 120K miles if you feel it makes sense for you. I bought it because of the air suspension and the electronics which are heavy with this ride.

Congrats and enjoy...

I've only noticed bad (IMHO) turbo lag when pushing the pedal to the floor as fast as I can. Just backing off a little bit seems to eliminate most turbo lag and still has enough to scare your passengers if they aren't ready for sudden acceleration from a stop.

Re: My 48 hour, 400 mile review...and some second guessing??

I also drive a lot of miles. My 2014 Ford has 145,000. I also need to pull a boat or Polaris Ranger, haul hunting and fishing gear and such and don't want two cars. I also have to go to work hundreds of miles away in snow or any condition. And ventilated seats and ACC appeal greatly to me. I'd love to get a truck but they are just too big for my everyday use and won't fit in my garage. I'm real close, maybe this week, to pulling the trigger on a '17 Overland. So, you can talk about buyers remorse or second guessing but a diesel JGC seems like a logical choice to me.

So I'm up to 5 days of ownership and over 1K miles. You, more than me, drive a lot of highway miles, so you will likely appreciate that I'm getting over 30MPG without even trying to go easy on the freeway....cruise usually set at 75-77.

I briefly towed my cargo traller and was thrilled with how well that went, so no issue there. If you are an off-roader at all then I'd strongly suggest the full air- suspension. Given the other options you want (ACC and Vent seats) seems like the Overland is an ideal choice for you. So far I'm a fan!

Good luck with your purchase!

Thanks! Turns out the dealer included an upgrade to extend the bumper-to-bumper warranty up to 100K miles, so I'm gonna bank on that for the time being...but great suggestion...thank you!
