Re: My DIY EcoDiesel maintenance list and tips

Yea, my maintenance is similar but different.

once a month or before a long trip:
------------------------------------
fill up with diesel
spray engine bay w/409 and wash with garden hose
check if DEF is 1/4 tank and add 5 gal.

at every oil change interval (by indicator, 10K miles, or 1 yr, whichever is first):
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. take to shop and tell them to change the oil & check my owners manual to see if anything is required.
2. clean my K&N filter

every 2yr/20K miles
---------------------
replace cabin filter
Replace fuel filters

every 3yr/30K miles
---------------------
same as 10k

every 5yr/50K miles
---------------------
not there yet so don't know

every 10yr/100K miles
---------------------
see 50k maint

every 10yr/150K miles
---------------------
see 50k maint

every 12yr/120K miles
---------------------
fix stuff as needed and see if there is another extended warranty available.

Re: My DIY EcoDiesel maintenance list and tips

I've never been a Pennzoil engine oil fan my whole life, now I'm using it in my Ecodiesel since I've been given the first (4) changes free from my dealership. Can you tell me akinney why you are using Mobil ESP in your Ecodiesel? Is it just a personal choice, or did the Blackstone samples show better results with Mobil ESP? Please remember I'm no Pennzoil fan, but I also don't like switching oil brands after starting with a certain kind. Thanks.

Personal preference. I've been using Mobil 1 full synthetic in my gas vehicles for the last 5 years or so based primarily on marketing claims and anecdotal evidence from others that do their own maintenance. I only recently did my first oil analysis and that was on the factory fill.

Regardless of the brand, it's pretty universally agreed that full synthetic protects engine parts better and handles long change intervals better than dino. It's kind of a moot point on the Ecodiesel, though, since it's part of the required spec.

Re: My DIY EcoDiesel maintenance list and tips

Thanks, akinney, for the good details and info. My 2016 is at 9,700 miles and I'll be doing my first JGC CRD oil change this weekend (I put 40K mi on a 2014 but always had the dealer change the oil).

You're welcome! I have another oil change due soon. I plan to get an analysis done on the Mobil 1 ESP. If wear metals look good, I'll keep using it.

Re: My DIY EcoDiesel maintenance list and tips

My oil change went smoothly, I just finished it. The only difference, maybe because mine is a 2016, is that at the end of the Oil Life reset steps in your first post (which changed Oil Life to ---, 3 dashes), I had to press OK on my steering wheel button. That changed the '---' to 100%.

Thanks again.

Re: My DIY EcoDiesel maintenance list and tips

I am at 45K miles and plan to do the transmission drain and fill, both diffs and transfer case. I have all the fluids except LG8 which is coming from CTSC most like late this week. I will use the rest of my Pennzoil then most likely go with Rotella since I ran that for 189K miles in my Super Duty before I sold it to get this JGC.

Overlkill on the fluids except the oil change but it is my ride and it will be with me for a long time. My oil analysis has been excellent with Pennzoil doing 10K oil changes with TBN showing significant life left in the oil.

I am using only MOPAR products except the oil to avoid any future issues. I will take pics of the fluids and the pump putting them in as documentation of the change.

By the way my power steering fluid is slowing leaking out. I made the mistake of going into the dealer after toping it up to the fill mark with Pentosin and they ran dias on the power steering system. No leaks. I am maybe 10K miles from it needing filled again so this time they can either fill it or see what is wrong. I paid for the dia fee by the way even though I have the 10 year/ 120K mile service plan so whatever you do let them make the call if your power steering fluid is low.
By the way the Pentosin is what I have been using in my BMW for 10 years and I was told at the dealership that it might be evaporating. I just laughed and said not a chance as I have never had to do the power steering in my BMW using the same fluid except for the flush.

Re: My DIY EcoDiesel maintenance list and tips

Something that worked well for me on my last oil change (20K miles) when draining the oil was to unscrew the oil filter cap until the green o-ring on the cap was just above the sealing area on the bottom portion. You could hear the air suck past the oil as soon as the seal released. This lets the oil drain out of the filter housing much better.

Then, after letting it drain overnight (single digit F temps in my garage that night, so the engine cooled off quickly), there wasn't any pumping needed for the oil filter housing. Saved me some time, hassle, and mess.

As an aside, my Blackstone UOA came back just fine with no problems for the Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30 and my usage patterns (20K mile change, 10K mile interval). My dealer's service manager said it was fine to continue using it from a warranty standpoint on my 2015. He said that if I had a 2016, though, I'd need to be using the newer spec for warranty purposes.

The same UOA also showed that the aFe Pro Guard D2 oil filter matched the OEM filtration of insolubles. The used aFe oil filter came out with no deformation of the pleats versus the OEM MOPAR oil filter that had deformed pleats at the same interval.

"spray engine bay w/409 and wash with garden hose"

I can just pop the hood spray 409 everywhere and spray with the hose? What about electronics? Any tips or prep I need to know beforehand?

Same here, just did my own for the 1st time ( Previously had free ones from the dealer..) Not a bad job if done with patience, I used up the last of the PZL Euro L I had. On to Rotella next change... My indicator changed on the 1st try to 100% and 8 quarts put it just below the max mark. Used a Mahle filter ( 13.50 on AMZ). Prob had 85.00 in the whole thing. Pretty easy job for only having to do every 10K. Can't believe how expensive even basic oil is anymore, let alone this stuff...

Cool. When I did mine, I allowed plenty of time and went at a slow, relaxing pace - my JGC CRD and me, we did some bonding that afternoon. Once every 10K or so is great, and the more I do it, the faster and more efficient I'll get. That'll come with time.

Had to chuckle when I re-read Andrew's OP:

Thanks again, Andrew and all others, for the good info in this thread.
