Need help with proper coolant confirmation

Hey guys

So long story short my coolant level was low 4K after having my 20k "service". I also noticed that my coolant is not the deep purple color that is noted with the new OAT coolant that is supposed to be used. Contacted my local stealership to voice my concerns and they got me in the next morning. Cool.

So after an hour and a half of waiting the service rep reported that there is no leak and that the service manager confirmed that the current orange/pink colored coolant is, in fact, the new OAT coolant and stated that that is just how it looks in the reservoir.

At this point my bullshit alarm is going off but I smiled and said ok.

So I was hoping that you guys may be able to help me out by snapping a picture of your reservoir with the OAT coolant and either posting it or PMing it to me to help assure myself that I'm not going crazy.

Lots of threads about this. The correct coolant looks like pink, orange, or purple depending on lighting and temperature. Daub some on a white paper towel if in doubt.

This coolant can evaporate if you have a poor sealing coolant reservoir cap, so check that.

Also, as the engine is driven more, bubbles in the coolant system work themselves out, lowering the apparent level. This is generally done in the first few thousand miles, though. It might take longer if it rarely gets up to full operating temperature or is driven only on flat smooth roads.

Just make sure you have the right coolant in your system, then top it off with the correct coolant. After that, watch to see if the level continues dropping.

Just had my coolant replaced after having my EGR cooler replaced. It started off Orange and is now pinky/purple. Going in this PM to get my Overflow tank replaced under warranty due to internal staining caused by the EGR issue. They will top up with new coolant and it could be Orange or it could be Purple LOL! In my case my dealer used 68163849AB, which is the 50/50 mix.

One thing to note....if you do have your coolant system flushed and the coolant replaced. Take it out for a decent drive, put your HVAC system on manual, turn the heat up to unbearable and drive it a few miles. This will ensure that your engine reached max temp and that the coolant has circulated throughout your system. After it has cooled down, you can then check the level in your overflow tank to ensure it is full. My dealer tech did a good job on mine as I found my interior temps were at 82 and the system was on manual. J Being as I live by "trust but verify" I did exactly what I outlined above and the level has remained constant the past week.

First off, MOPAR OAT is purple, and it should look purple in your expansion tank if it's all purple. From the factory, my coolant was pink (but not orange) but that is because as I understand, they switched dyes in the coolant since then.

Second, be careful cycling between hot and cool. I did that a couple of times earlier in the month trying to cycle through all my coolant and an hour after I got home after that drive, my garage floor was full of coolant as the result of the water inlet tube (p/n 68211220AA) breaking. Who knows, maybe that was just a coincidence. Since this hose sits under the intake manifold and the dealer gets 7 hours of labor time to swap the part, I consider this a weak link.

Andymax,
It appears that we have a similar issue on our JGC ED's that is seen on the Ram ED board. Mine was actually worse, given the fact that mine turned a sludgy brown color in the process. I originally thought it was the casting sand problem but, IMHO, it was most likely a combination of the two:(.

Here's a linky to the Ram ED issue :
Are you slowly loosing coolant? Possible EGR cooler leak.

Airbull, you were correct. The NEW OAT coolant they used when replacing my EGR cooler is Part # 68163846AB (50/50 mix) and is Purple but my factory fill was Orange!
