Mike- sorry for the delay in responding.we're at the beach for a few days and don't get on the Internet much down here..

I do not have a specific list per se. The PPI that I do actually depends on the vehicle that I'm buying as I research the pros and cons of each vehicle.

Having said that in general I start with a walk around the vehicle at about 15 feet or so to get an overall feel. Is the car level left to right? Is the paint on each panel matching etc.
Then I do the same close up...are the panel gaps consistent? How is the paint? Any orange peel? How are the wheels/ tires? I will tell you that the tire pressure is almost never correct so bring a good tire gauge and check them yourself. It will influence the ride later...
Moving to the inside I look carefully with all the doors open and once again get an overall feel then move inside and check the seats, carpeting, dash, hood liner etc.
I look inside the engine bay. Are the fluids correct? Belts on? Etc.
Then I have the sales guy go over ALL the workings of the car like the nav system, radio, heated seats etc. In the GC I had him show me the level of the DEF fluid so I confirmed that it was topped off (it was).
Then I take it out for a drive and check the road handling characteristics of the car and make sure it meets my expectations. I conduct a series of fast accelerations and fast braking maneuvers to make sure the car doesn't pull to one side or the other.

I would never do this with a car that was outside in the rain. I would make the dealer bring it inside in a well lit area and be sure to take your time....

Hope this helps.

How does breaking assist work better with near setting? Could you explain it little more?

Thanks

it gives you a little more room to play with before the system "needs" to brake. I've had it go off a few times when I was simply coasting (and closing with the car in front of ). Since I knew I had plenty of distance to coast and match speeds with the vehicle in front of me, I didn't brake.

ACC does the same thing, it gets a bit manic if you're set to the minimum follow distance since it has to constantly feather the throttle to maintain it. (depending on who you're following)
