New Oil Drips on my Driveway

The other day out on the sand dunes I lost my front skid plate and also the flimsy cardboard-like black shroud underneath the front end. I wrote about it in this thread: Fun on the sand dunes at Pismo Beach, & front skid plate thrashed.

Now a couple of days later I see new oil drips on my driveway where my JGC's front end usually sits (I always back in and park in the same spot - his and hers driveway, she has her side and I have mine, rules of the house I live by or I sleep on the couch). Oil drips!!! Pisses me off. Maybe that's too strong but it is concerning.

I don't know if the leak is new, perhaps caused by a bump to the oil pan when I was on the dunes, or if the leak has been there for a while but masked by the flimsy shroud or front skid plate. I'm due for a service so will bring it into the dealer in the coming week or three and have them locate the source(s). I haven't crawled underneath myself to try and spot it. I must be getting soft in my old(er) age. Shit, I'm only 54.

But the oil drips irk me. I want a tight engine. I check oil level at every single fillup. Every time. No appreciable loss seen on the stick. My last car was a 2001 Honda CR-V that I had for 14 years and 225,000 miles. No oil drips whatsoever. I plan to keep this JGC for a long time, perhaps 300K miles.

Thoughts?

Re: New Oil Drips on my Driveway

Possible causes for oil leak down front of engine?

Have you seen that thread?

Re: New Oil Drips on my Driveway

Hopefully it is just the oil plug leaking, but when you knocked of the skid plate, perhaps you disturbed the oil pan, and is leaking thru the gasket.

Sucks being 54, (me too). Can't see without glasses anymore.

I see you have the air lift suspension with Quadra-trac 2. Just curious, I have a Limited with the AV2 option and it comes with Quadra-drive 2, you do not have this? I think the only difference is the electronic limited slip rear end.

Hopefully so.

Yeah, I do have QT-II, not QD-II, am certain of it. It's good enough for my needs, but yeah that ELSD would be nice.

An old thread. Dan, I came here to note that I have QD-2, not QT-2. I do have the rear ELSD.

Re: New Oil Drips on my Driveway

I had a similar leak and took my jeep into the dealer to have it checked out under my max care warranty. They tried to tell me it was "normal seepage". I fought them on this and so they cleaned it up and told me to drive it and bring it back to locate the leak. This went on for a little while and I finally had to pull the "I'm not some dude with no mechanical inclination or knowledge of an internal combustion engine" card and tell them they need to get it done. I suggested a look at the timing chain cover as there was some precedence for a leak here. There was clearly oil coming down from the front of the engine and dripping off my drain plug. They found a leak there and resealed the cover, claiming that it had been done before but with the incorrect RTV. After a couple days the leak returned and so I returned to the dealer. This time they said it was a leaky galley plug which they replaced... Again the leak returned and again so did I... This time they replaced the oil pan gasket while also doing the TSB for the heads and, knock on wood, that seems to have done the trick. Perhaps this info can be of some use to you! I will say the leak presented itself the same way each time. Oil seelingly leaking from the font of the engine and dripping off the oil plug. So either I had 3 leaking gaskets/seals or one thing they failed to fix the first two times

AJMorris343: do you know what the dealer had to do in order to replace the oil pan gasket ie. how labor intensive/intrusive was it? Thanks.

It turned out not to be oil. When the skid plate tore off the back edge of it went up and dinged the front axle - it's been so long, I don't remember exactly where. I didn't take pictures of the damage but they showed it to me when it was on the lift. The drips were from the front axle's (housing? diff? - don't remember now).

Definitely not engine oil. So far in 45,000 miles of JGC CRD ownership, no oil drips and no oil loss. I check the oil every time I fill the tank.

Comment only:
It was a long time ago - summer 2015 when that damage happened at Pismo. I opened my other thread (here - Fun on the sand dunes at Pismo Beach, & front skid plate thrashed) and had forgotten my dog was with us then. There's a picture of her right there in the first post where my wife is holding the skid plate. Only two months later we had to put the pup down. The Big C got her. She was a great dog. :sniff:

I'm glad they solved it and I hope it stays oil-tight!
